I've had some bloke this evening calling me "tokenist" for citing Jewish academics. I linked to an article on the Jewishness of the Frankfurt School, and the importance of this in our understanding of the Holocaust so he's come back with "are you Jewish?". He can spend his evening poring over my Tweets trying to find something if he wishes.

I think they probably would have done, as the dad was a Gujarati shopkeeper expelled from Uganda by Amin. Same occupation and outlook as Thatcher's dad. But she's deliberately turning a blind eye to the racism that Ugandan Asians faced from the same party she now represents, which resulted in the door being closed on others of South Asian descent (especially Pakistanis and Bangladeshis, given their greater proportion of rural poor).

There was clearly some cultural sifting from c.1965-85 whereby those South Asian immigrants with a strong Thatcherite streak attained a kind of provisional whiteness and were excluded from the blatant discrimination inflicted on all other South Asians. Similar to how some Latinos vote Republican, even in the Trump era.

This is something I know a fair bit about, having studied the Ugandan Asian 'crisis' while at university in a city with a large Ugandan Asian population.
