    Yeah, that's a baseball player's moniker surely?

      She was a cross-country runner.

The name is real (her middle name is Rain)

The second of five children, Zephyr Teachout was born in Seattle, Washington, to Peter Teachout, a constitutional law professor at Vermont Law School, and Mary Miles Teachout, a state court judge.

Of course. A child of the Wet Coast counter-culture, I should have guessed.

I am surprised that Betsy is not giving money to fund scientific thinking about biology, to see whether she has "one, two three, four, five:..."

In a sea of average, she is truly the expense-account, vocally-impaired, manhattan project, of all special needs students. To her credit, she Moses-ed her way thru the sea of knowledge, and found the goose of truth, which also happened to do something with gold and rich daddies.

Never let it be said that stupidity can't buy you

                Yeah, that'll do.

I infer from her year of birth (1971) that the parents were indulging in the lifestyle options of the era: full name Zephyr Rain Teachout, so the name literally means "wind and rain", i.e the elements. OTOH her father is a colonel who served in Vietnam and her mother is a judge.

The surname is not that uncommon. There's a jazz writer called Terry Teachout whom I assume is no relation (he's from Missouri, she Seattle then Vermont).

White South African farmers: Trump taking his talking points from that mad British woman whose name escapes me. Fairly obvious dogwhistle stoking redneck fears about the assumed black peril (and perhaps an Obama = African inflection).

                          Or the Four Tops.

Reaching a bit but maybe Fire and Rain by James Taylor was on the turntable. Nothing radical but hippy enough for a colonel and a lawyer.

I'm not sure it even qualifies as a dogwhistle. It's pretty much "WHITE GENOCIDE!" without using the word.

Isn't speculating on who a possible democratic presidential nominee for AG might be in the potential future in which there is a president from that party even if at this stage we don't have the slightest clue of who might even be standing in 2020, even more jumping the gun/a waste of energy than Tubbs putting up polling for Congressional seats 6 months in advance?

Ah, apologies. Didn't read the article obviously (I always forget that the NYT is a local paper as well as a national one)

                                              No worries.

Teachout is interesting for a number of reasons, the most significant being that she is an expert on governmental corruption and a leading figure in all of the "emoluments clause" cases.

In most NY state and local elections, the NYT's endorsement in a Democratic primary (see the link) is a virtual guarantee of election (and victory in the Democratic primary a virtual guarantee of victory in the general election), but we've all learned to be distrustful of "common wisdom".

Briefly, it's the spending of money to gain political advantage.
