Has everyone else put a source reference in their posts?

        Exactly

USD is still the reserve currency and will always benefit in a global crisis. I would think that the Swiss Franc is doing well, too.

I ventured out to the shop downstairs. There were a few young people running around, touching things and acting like kids. This is a large part of how viruses are spread, but at the same time, I felt sorry for them. This probably isn't a fun time to be a kid.

The shop downstairs sold all of the TP that was on the shelf the other day, but they had a pallet of the stuff waiting to be put on the shelf. I don't need any, just happened to notice when I almost tripped over the pallet.

The hardest part was resisting the urge to buy all of the chocolate bars like there would be no tomorrow.

The latter of which I politely questioned, the former of which I didn't comment on because there's always the danger it gets a bit "Look at me, look at me"

I think the point has been made anyway, the whole issue and thread is too serious for bickering.

I had someone WhatsApp me today saying the country was going into lockdown on Friday and buy fresh food now. (This is the same person who advised gargling with vinegar / avoiding 5G masts. I asked where she heard that and she didn't reply.)

and thanks for your invaluable insights

                  from the FT
I've just seen Nef posted that, the only bit I meant to add was that it was confirmed on the BBC, and that they were being based at Aldershot.

I've been advised, by a couple of people now, to keep a few thousand $US in cash somewhere in the house. Our financial advisor at RBC says that things haven't come to that ... yet. (With the unspoken observation that they might in the future.)

I wouldn't worry about that too much. You are more likely to catch a sickness from the notes than it be beneficial. The banks are in very good shape, all be it with some complex shutdown related effects on their loan books.

That kind of psychology has great staying power.

Some of ms. ursus' relatives in Slovenia continued to keep a stash of Deutschemarks well after the time at which they were no longer accepted in Germany (other than at the ECB, etc.)

MsD, did you experience the magical value of Kent cigarettes (and only Kent cigarettes), or had that spell been broken by the time you were spending time there?

I know several people who only bought Kent before they went to the USSR (or Romania) and then only for the purposes of barter and bribes.

it was a 70s/early 80s thing, And on a much more retail level than the one your beau operated on.

Which also makes think that there is a millennia old history of brigands joining the church as a second career.

Marlboro were helpful in all of the non-Kent countries of the Eastern Bloc. My mother and I took a carton or two to Poland even though neither of us smoked.

                              Ah yes

When Kent ever a thing, the cool kids were re-recording Western albums onto used x-rays

My SiL in London is pretty sure he has the virus. He phoned the hotline and they said it sounded like it, but they wouldn't test him. He's self-quarantining, and trying to keep his three-year-old daughter away from him, a difficult and fraught experience for both of them.

When I took Teddy out for his walk tonight, we saw a couple of his friends. They were all very excited to see each other while the other dogs' owner and I stayed far away from each other. I laughed and said, 'at least they don't have to worry about this'. Cue the resident trump supporter, who was walking out with his girlfriend's dog and he says, "no, they do have to worry about it" and he insisted that he was getting his info from the CDC (probably via Fux News). I thanked him for the info because I couldn't stand there all night arguing with a trump supporter. They are immovable.

But, for the record, COVID-19 is HIGHLY unlikely to jump species or spread from dog to dog. There are strains of coronavirus that infect dogs and horses and cows, but it's a different strain. I'm not going to stop my dog from greeting his friends because of fear of this virus.

It has to be said though, that the trump supporter's girlfriend's dog is not very well socialised and has no doggy friends. He's probably just jealous.

                                              It's true.

I've been shopping online for a digital thermometer tonight, but it seems they're as hard to find as toilet paper. Actually, that's not true. I found some on Amazon, but they won't arrive until late April or sometime in May. I think I'll check with the pharmacy downstairs tomorrow. This is so crazy.

We thought ours was on the fritz over the weekend and I encountered the same thing. Thankfully it was just flaky batteries.
