Auckland (thanks). I don't think anyone I know is affected, although no names or numbers of fatalities have been released yet.
It's one of those times where you spend 10 minutes following every news outlet, then feel sick of it and want to do something else, then can't concentrate and go back to the repeated and often unhelpful "news". And social media is ... well, we all know what it is.
Just all too horrible, and familiar, but here instead of "offshore", where the bad stuff happens.

It still bothers me immensely the level of detail media releases about the criminals in these situations. There were extracts from his "live stream" and his full 37 page "manifesto". Hopefully now taken down, not certain. Precisely why he had the names of assailants who committed similar atrocities in Canada and Italy written on his gun - because he knew all about what they'd done. And so it goes on.
Reproduce nothing from the perpetrators, report the facts people need to know, that's it.
But that's just shouting at a cloud.

This is awful news to wake up to.
Sits, you're right - the media today are highly irresponsible in what they report. But, we're in the clickbait age and they're doing what they've been conditioned to do. It's secondary to the horror of what's happened but it grates nonetheless.
Best wishes to any NZ OTFers, Tee rex included.

Not that any life is worth more than any other but the Bangladesh cricket team were on their way and less than five minutes from the mosque. They were the lucky ones. It's a horrible story and my heart goes out to everyone affected.

A tiny shaft of light in the darkness:
In possibly a world first, a NZ National (=Tory) MP tells an Australian fascist senator to "fuck off". And yes, it is a quote.

Turned on the radio while driving home from school this afternoon and assumed that the affable Jesse Mulligan was talking about something that had happened in the USA. Still finding it hard to really comprehend this. Lots of friends in Christchurch, but very unlikely any of them would be directly affected.
NZ is often represented as some sort of slightly silly semi-paradise but it has plenty of dark corners and diseased minds, so I'm not massively surprised that there were neo-Nazi shitburgers scheming something like this up. I'm slightly surprised by their ability to carry out a fairly complex plan, however.
I did briefly entertain the idea of going down to a mosque here in Palmerston North as a gesture of solidarity, but they put out a request for everyone just to stay the fuck away from mosques. Probably a good idea - I suppose a six foot white skinhead wandering up would probably not be well received, at the moment. Remember "I'll ride with you" following one of the Melbourne atrocities? Notice the pattern? After all the various acts committed by white male turds I'm wondering - as a white male - if we need something similar. How could anyone feel comfortable having us about?
Maybe the more extreme fringe of the radical feminist movement was right after all.Last edited by Lurgee; 15-03-2019, 11:28.

They seem to be making a point of choosing deliberately soft targets - a black church (wanker in the US), a synagogue (wanker in the US), an island full of children in the youth wing of a socialist party (wanker in Sweden) and mosques (wankers in NZ). I don't think you have to be very clever to work out the pattern here.

Same as you all said.
I know the killer is an Aussie, but I spent one night in Christchurch, got a taxi from the hotel first thing in the morning, and practically the first thing the white taxi driver said was "yeh, it's an OK place but we're getting a lot of IMMIGRANTS coming here." I shut him up but it left a sour taste.
My friends in Auckland are "mixed" (brown Dad, and one child, white Mum; also a black/white couple) and they said that was quite typical these days. They experience some racism, not on the scale of Australia, or that the Maoris get.Last edited by MsD; 15-03-2019, 14:58.

God this is horrendous. Though it is staggering that some people are using this as an opportunity to double down on this sort of bullshit. Gemma O'Doherty who has been mentioned here a couple of times has completely gone off the fucking deep end talking about false flag operations. If this was 15 years ago she'd probably be sectioned at this point, but we don't do that any more, because we used to do altogether too much of it.
