This is amazing thanks. Always facinated by these tiny nations thousands of kilometres from any major landmass.

Old-maps.co.uk is a very nerdy way to waste a few hours. Looking at old football grounds and watching them evolve over time was interesting, although you can’t really get a good map on the site after 1975.

Huh. I had no idea about Andy Murray. Wonder why it's so popular with solo sportspeople.

Not a map but a novel about an obsessive map collector-
just started reading Colin Harrison 'You Belong to Me' which will become a psychological thriller but has so far focused largely on the historical maps of NYC and the 50-something central character 's collection and how he displays them

Tell me about it. I have, for some time, been trying to collect a set of OS one-inch Seventh Series maps. I got it down to under twenty required at which point I was only finding the odd one every now and then until, just before Christmas, I went into a secondhand bookshop I'd only visited a couple of months previously and found about ten I needed so now only require six. It could be a long haul. Except I don't display them; I catalogue them then stick them in a box.

How many of these maps are there, Capybara?

There are 190, though within that there are numerous differences depending on revisions, updates, style of cover, paper or cloth backing, etc. The primary aim is to collect the 190.

There’s also a detailed description of a 19thC sea captain whose collection comes up at auction- he seals the maps he gathers on his travels into artillery shells and stored them in an airtight place.

Guy lives in Sheffield. (Though I presume he's originally from Darlington)
