An eerie calm envelops the scorecard. 14 pars and seven holes halved. The tension that dares not speak its name: this thing just got real. The 2.5-point vultures encircle in tighter concert, voraciously attuned to any faltering step in the top match that would open the door to a tie-break playoff.

Simon G knows how to time a finish, and leaves Rogin the Armchair fan urgently seeking second wind to replicate the victory over the same opponent in Round 4 of WMT2. ad hoc can surely take nothing for granted against San Bernardhinault, who came into the round with more hole wins than anyone in this tournament.

Breaking with custom, Sporting is in pole position to be the first to shrug off the mounting pressures; if that match ends up halved from dormice 3 up, avert your eyes from the furtive figure urinating on the pin-flags after dark in a bid to break the hex. Hot Orange and WOM have so gleefully shed the tag of par-four bores that they're now feasting on birdies like Sylvester in his dream-bubble.
