There's a line of thinking that says Trump will drop the tariffs as soon as PA-18 is done, and this is a supremely cynical short term move to buy a House seat that the Republicans don't even need, and which is changing so much next term that there won't be any incumbency benefit anyway.

50-31% American voters oppose tariffs on steel and aluminum.

64–28% disagree with Trump’s claim that a trade war would be good, per @QuinnipiacPoll.

Every party, gender, education, age and racial group oppose tariffs, except Republicans and white voters with no college degree.

This is true of most of Trump's policy positions.

They all do here. Even our otherwise sane senator Casey does. It would be political suicide to do otherwise.

People don't get that everyone else sticks tariffs on stuff back?

                    No, they don't.

They think that the tariffs are just "making things fair" and the other countries will just say "Well-played, old sport."

They should have paid attention in high school.

I can't find any comment from Sanders on the tariffs.

It's hard for Democrats who were very critical of NAFTA to come out against tarrifs intended to "Protect American Jobs." I understand that criticizing NAFTA doesn't necessarily mean being pro-protectionism, but the nuance gets lost.

Sanders was never a free-trader. That's probably his biggest shortcoming, from my point of view. He himself might not be an old-school 70s throwback lefty protectionist, but a lot of his supporters are, and having heard him slamming NAFTA down the years they certainly assume that he's with them. So it's no surprise that Bernie's being a little quiet about this.

Makes sense for Trump to sink the global economy and crank up populist anger in other countries....

At times i wonder if chaos and anger is what those nutters want to destroy all global institutions.

                                    Yeah.

Is it going to get any easier to oppose this madness later? It'll be more difficult, won't it?

He's been wanting out since at least Charlottesville. Banking regulations going, and Trump going nuts on protectionism, mean he has a good excuse to run away.

Well the thing is that that you can be opposed to free trade, but when the time comes to actually introduce tariffs, someone points out that it's self defeating and show how it would damage the economy in other ways, so it doesn't happen. (Sometimes imposing tariffs is actually necessary and economically justifiable.)

Is there any chance that this case could result in Trump being convicted of campaign finance fraud? And if so, what are the potential consequences? There is a little part of me that would prefer him to come unstuck from stupidity related to a porn star than related to massive collusion with a foreign adversary. He deserves a trivial and stupid cause for his demise, not something big and grand.
