I just saw that the positivity rate in South Dakota (and Kansas) is above 60%. I don't think I'd registered quite how bad it was getting in the middle of the country.

To put it into some sort of perspective. The closest Canadian province to South Dakota geographically is Saskatchewan. It's also close in population 1.2 million, to SD's 0.9 million. But covid-wise they're worlds apart. South Dakota is running at 1,800 cases a day, while Saskatchewan, today, announced 181.

I've seen Covid referred to as the "Fundie Flu" and "Christian Flu" by some Americans because of the correlation between hard-core religionists and conspiracy antimask sentiments and actions.

Seems like the same correlation is happening here. A Christian Cafe in Gedling (Notts) put up signs warning Covid officers would be trespassing if they entered - citing Magna Carta.

School transmission anecdote. Someone I know was part of a zoom conference call today. Another participant, the head of a local secondary school, turned up slightly late, apologising as she had 30 staff off with C19/isolation. By the end of the call, the number was 37.
