I'm 'fessing up, I quite like a Nickelback song

Ah, shit, I didn't mean "Me And The Farmer" (not a high point in the Housemartins career either), but "Five Get Overexcited".

    To compensate, Housemartins top 5:

    1. Freedom
    2. Flag Day
    3. Sheep
    4. Heaven Help Us All
    5. There Is Always Something There To Remind Me

That was actually quite difficult; lots of great songs I had to choose between (Build, We're Not Deep, Lean On Me, Think For A Minute, Hopelessly Devoted To Them; there, top 10).

    Dire Straits:

    1. Romeo And Juliet
    2. Tunnel Of Love
    3. Making Movies
    4. Sultans Of Swing
    5. Brothers In Arms

And Knopfler's Local Hero theme, which has been defiled by Newcastle United.

'The Mighty Ship' is fantastic too, you don't have to worry about the lyrics either.

        Wyatt's favourite...
More like "least detested". And that's because it's the one that sounds least like Billy Joel.

BJ's someone I just kind of casually advocate the murder of, but Heaton actually fills me with bloodlust. I've got no insight at all into what any of you see in him or his works.

Dire Straits are/were purest evil. Nothing they ever inflicted on humanity has worth.

I've never heard of the pop group in the title of this thread. Sounds like I'm the lucky one.

What exactly has Paul Heaton done to inspire such hatred, Wyatt?

Been consistently shit, smug, smartarse and punchable for decades. Plus his voice. Plus his lazy generalisations about London. Plus his flirtations with hooligan chic. Plus his facile take on left-wing politics. Plus what seems to be a deep, deep misogyny.

I've spent quite a lot of time with Paul Heaton, and the thing is, I reckon you and he would get along like a house on fire.

Screams, flames, people running in terror.

I've been thinking about this for a while and I can't really bring myself to hate any musician purely for their music. Even on the OTF hate-a-thon knockout I was pretty much going for those who I felt the most "meh". I have no real desire to slaughter Sting, James Blunt, Dire Straits, Phil Collins or any of the other Great Satans who are execrated by those in the know. Even music I can't be bothered with doesn't inspire me to want to rise up in anger against the perpetrators. I just switch over.

True, personality wise some of them are total arses, but I'm afraid as a sheep of the herd I'm content to graze.

I should also say that recently Radio 2 and Virgin Classic Rock have entered themselves as favourites on my digital radio (except Jeremy Vine's Daily Mail on the Radio slot - he can fuck off).

Back to the titular admission, I have realised another reason I like it is because it reminds me of this.

I like some Nickelback. I also like Shostakovich. And a bunch of people who fall between those two extremes.

I suspect, in musical terms, I'm terminally uncool. I don't really care. I like what I like.

                                  (Hello Wyatt!)

Quite right, meerkat. There is no need to be embarrassed about liking music you like. As long as one is not operating from a position of ignorance and thinks that Michael Bolton invented soul music. Otherwise, fuck the taste police.

                                    Still, Nickelback. Eurgh.
