Union put in a excellent shift at Stuttgart today. Could, maybe should have won. Still two away goals and partizan home crowd ought to do the job on Monday. Stuttgart really looked poor, especially in their own area.

I'm assuming from that that away goals are significant. The group of Stuttgart supporters who turned up in my local certainly left disappointed. I see also that the 2/3 playoff has the 3. Liga team at home first. Is that always the case? If so, why is it when the 1/2 playoff is the other way round?

Great news for Union, though I expect that they and Paderborn will struggle next year. But there's always the example of sides like Darmstadt or Ingolstadt, who against the odds survived more than one season.
Next season's relegation battle will surely be interesting. Union and Paderborn will probably do battle with teams like Köln, Düsseldorf and Augsburg. Freiburg and Mainz are always candidates for a good relegation struggle as well. And who knows whether Wolfsburg's success this year after a few seasons fighting relegation will prove to be temporary. After how they treated Labbadia, I hope so. And there's usually a good side battling relegation as well. Next year it could be a side like Gladbach, who are shedding players.
And for the sake of imp, I shall top my dire predictions for Frankfurt, who seem determined to prove me wrong. Rock bottom with 5 points (that should be enough for CL qualification).
The 2. Bundesliga will be tasty as well, with Stuttgart, HSV, Nürnberg and Hannover in the mix. I can see sides like Bielefeld and Bochum competing as well, plus one or the other surprise team such as Karlsruhe or Heidenheim (again) annoying the big clubs.

A mate of mine moved to Bielefeld this season, so I've started paying a bit more attention to Arminia - their early season form was dreadful but they've been class in the Nachrunde.
Die Alm is also the most smokingest place I've ever been, worse than the top deck of a bus forty years ago.

My goddaughter's father works round the corner from Union Berlin's ground. In the 28 years that he's been there, he reckons he could have counted the football-related conversations he'd had on the fingers of a closed fist.
Until yesterday. Then, everybody was claiming to be a lifelong Union fan. One bloke even came in with an Union scarf that still had the crease marks in it and stlll smelled of the packaging.

To be fair their average attendance this season is just over 21,000 and the ground capacity a bit more than 22,000.

Separated by the regional leagues that existed before the introduyction of the Bundesliga in 1963, the tables might have looked something like this.
