He (the cop) was in a relationship with his co-accused pig, who restricted herself to just battering the unconscious Atkinson with her baton while her bf egged her on. Reading the full summary of the case (in the Daily Mail, the only site I found covering it in any depth), you can see where the defence will go with this - the couple were extremely scared of Atkinson, she pressed the panic button which summons back up, and she relayed to the other cops how frightening the scene was - Atkinson was extremely manic and bloodstained (from ripping his dialysis line out).

They'll claim that the unconscious man was trying to get up when he was kicked and beaten. They'll claim the Taser was faulty or that male pig was frozen in panic and couldn't let go of the trigger, resetting the override six times.

Their medical experts will try and claim that Atkinson was already close to death and that it might not be his treatment that night that killed him. A key witness (Atkinson's father) has since died, and other witnesses were far away and it was dark.

I hope to be wrong, but I can see acquittals, unless there's some more damning evidence where the two accused have discussed the case, especially as their relationship is now apparently over.

I think we should avoid the p-word, although I understand your anger.

Managed to start a thread on this over on World without checking here first. It's beyond despicable. If they don't go to prison...Sadly, what jwdd27 says is probably the most likely outcome

I hadn't heard the police officers were in a relationship. I'm surprised that's allowed between working beat partners.

It may not have been known to their superiors. Report I read yesterday said they were no longer.

The relationship was known about within the nick.

See my first post on here as to why I know this.

Commenting on stuff being reported in the papers isn't going to prejudice a trial is it.

I was/am careful in my posts to only include what was in the court reports - there's other stuff which is "common knowledge" which was reported in the papers around the time of his death (possible defence angles) which I excluded as it hasn't yet come up in court.

This is different to the former Welsh footballer's case in that certain facts are not disputed - he was tasered for 33 seconds, kicked in the head with force and beaten with a baton. By the po-po.

Why are they calling it a stun gun and not a taser?

The attempts now seem to be to show he was in ill health and that caused his death.

He was still handcuffed when he was on the stretcher because the police said he was a threat. Is there a police handbook on how to get away with murder?

                            Edit: spelling of gun.

That is very odd, AE. Even for the guardian.

I checked the writer and it was a staffer not AP or Reuters which makes it odder.

That is odd but all the article is doing is summarising the defence case ("court hears"). I don't see any hidden agenda here,

The Guardian's consistently used the word Taser, to change it is strange. The defence may want to do that but the journalist should be clear, in my opinion, what was used.

Strange and suspicious. Have you contacted them about it and asked them why they have changed it?

I'm unimpressed with them using his health status as a defence either.

The defence is unlikely to be impressive.

Taser is a brand name (though it has very much come to be used for the entire genre of electroshock weapons)

It may have been brought to their attention (perhaps in court) that the weapon in question was not made by TASER (now Axon)

Well maybe, but a taser (or a TASERTM) isn't a stun gun because it can be used at distance.
