    Current gaming

Nah, you always need to be online or the game breaks (even in single player, the actions of players in the online world effect the "story" as much as it is) but I've only played the single player mode (which you can switch to have real players in your game as well). I'm too shit to face dogfights with real players. It's not for everyone, but it's mad addictive if you get into it.

It is certainly a bit different from the Elite of my childhood. I never actually got to play it, because the twat who had the BBC was a selfish little shit.

The amazing thing is it's at heart the same as the original game, which I could hardly play at all on the pirated spectrum copy I made from a friend's. Without the keyboard overlay, you were bollocksed with the controls (and the overlay didn't work for my Lord Sugar model spectrum). Way easier with a controller (and even better with mouse/keyboard for the richer nerd I'm sure). And the upgrade from vector graphics helps too.

Grand Theft Horsey 2 is official

I never got on with the first one. I couldn't figure out what to do, I wasn't very good and it took ages to do anything.
            That aside it was fine.

Bugger, that's a long time, I was hoping for the Spring.

RDR1 is my all-time favourite I think; the story was nuanced and interesting, and I was genuinely upset at the end - partly cos it had finished, and partly because of the fate of Ol John Marston.

Yes, I think that is what elevated it. It not only nailed the Old West atmosphere but the story had a real emotional hook to it.

I don't think I ever reacted the way I did to... certain events like I did to RDR.

                [spoiler]
I was "just one more mission and I'll call it a night.... What? You bastards". And then I finished the rest off on a killing spree that I hadn't actually done in the game as a whole. IIRC, I shot the agent in each limb before shooting the lamp out on his house so that his wife burnt to death. I was genuinely upset!"

Like some above, I'm not an online player - it terrified the life out of me when I tried it, for the first time, on RDR - so I'm hoping that their promise to create a 'new' online experience doesn't mean they discount the single-player experience too much.

                    Awful download/update process.

But fantastic game, from the little I've played so far - the campaign seems long and varied enough, it obviously looks gorgeous and the multiplayer is enjoyable as it seems to have accurately ranked me for once - so I'm playing with people as painfully average as myself.

How are you getting on with it?

Think I've forgotten how to do gaming. Spent an hour last night decorating my house in Fallout 4. Didn't kill anything.

Apparently Nintendo is finally going to unveil the NX this afternoon at 3pm. But in typically obtuse fashion, all they're doing is posting a 3 minute trailer video.

And here it is. Very much in line with all the rumours, which I'm quite happy with. Also there's either a bunch of unannounced (if mostly predictable) games in the trailer or it's backwards compatible with the Wii-U.

It's like that but without any of the fun or humour or silliness really.

GoW4's campaign is really, really enjoyable. Tense and intense in equal measure.

I've told myself I won't play the online modes until I've finished the game, but I do want to dive into Horde 3.0.

I'm still finding myself obsessed with Eliteangerous, and there's a new update out on Tuesday which introduces new ships and new gameplay features.

In the meantime, I've joined a Powerplay group via the official forum to try and get more from this part of the game. Turns out they coordinate their strategy using Trello and Slack. There is a vetting process (need for dental checks as yet unconfirmed) to ensure that spies from other factions cannot gain access to the Slack channel.

I fear this might be too much like being back at work for my liking, but then I really want the Prismatic Shields that come with reaching level three within the faction rankings. Games that can offer a strategic challenge deep enough that I can totally dispense with real life are what I'm looking for, and this one fits the bill nicely.

                                    Playing PES 2017 earlier.

Wales v Portugal as I was feeling in a vengeful mood, 65 minutes gone. Moutinho plays a pass back from just inside his own half. The ball trickles forward with no-one near it. It goes straight through Patricio's legs and in the back of the net. Camera pans back to Moutinho slumped on the turf.

I laughed so hard, I almost gave myself an aneurysm.

So I finished RDR a while ago. It was both addictive and annoying. I had to play to the end but it was nowhere near as much fun as GTA5.

Now I'm back on getting my arse handed to me by 14 year olds on Battlefront and working through the remastered Batman games on the Xbox One.
No new games for Xmas this year. After getting The Tomb Raider one and one of the CoD games last year which were both utter shit I didn't think I'd bother. (Although I at least played the CoD one - the Tomb Raider one I gave up on when you had to start crafting a load of shit to get past a bear or something. Fuck that shit, if a game turns into woodwork class it's lost me.)

I managed to get hold of a PSP emulator, and am going through a back catalogue available at disreputable websites.

Something called "Need For Speed Carbon - Own The City" is the best so far. Haven't really started on the baseball properly yet. And there is a SEGA Classics game, which has Sonic, and Sonic 2, which are still excellent.

After flirtations with SOMA (SF/Horror survival) and Quern: Undying Thoughts (Exploration/Puzzle) I've gone back to No Man's Sky for the Foundation update.

Re-started the "Normal" game type to get a handle on the numerous changes and really enjoying it. Not done much exploring but have earned a shitload of money trading, built my first base and moved my base to a better planet. Recruited my four assistants - Gek construction engineer and Gek farmer, Korvax scientist and Vy'keen weapon specialist - and have them working on upgrades for my equipment.

Yesterday I tried the "Survival" game type. Found myself about ten minutes walk from my crashed ship on a radioactive planet where just standing still meant radiation levels rising and life support dropping. Got some extra power for my mining laser and repaired my scanner then took to the underground caves to avoid the radiation as much as possible. Took about forty minutes to get to my crashed ship, with near fatal radiation levels and the proverbial "sparrow's fart" of life support left. The feeling of achievement was tremendous, but I fear I'll die before being able to repair the ship and progress.

Currently 40% discount on Steam (£24 rather than £40) so if you've been thinking of trying NMS now might be a good time to take a punt.

Nah, the gameplay's totally different, especially the later you get into the game. It almost gets Monster Hunter-y. Have to admit, I don't really think you'll get on with by that point. I don't think the script's terrible by game standards, though it's not great. The backstory ends up being pretty interesting.

Yeah, you really can't do that with most of the enemies in the second area. You need to exploit the elemental weaknesses, tear off armour, and mix up your arrows. Traps and tripwires are only really necessary for the biggest fights, but they certainly help in most situations, especially once you get the skill that lets you pick them up again.
