Meanwhile in more Hungary and Poland news, the new head of the Hungarian army (after Orban's purges of the entirety of the top brass) pursued his boss's line of argument on Ukraine (which is to say to be in favour of "peace" as they see it, or appeasement of Russia as everyone else sees it). He did this by referencing the second world war and the Nazi invasion of Poland as being a local conflict which could have been resolved with peace talks. In so doing he has (a) managed to render his own point invalid (since actually the other powers did that with Czechoslovakia, and look where that got us), and (b) thoroughly piss off the closest thing a that Hungary has to an ally in the EU

He seemed to be trying very hard to walk a tightrope.

I actually don't know. Orban feels like it gave him some legitimacy I think (as in his eyes the Pope supports the Hungarian line on Ukraine, though there is a lot more nuance he is choosing to overlook).

But before anyone gets their hopes up (a) he's a bit of a dick (though an improvement on Orbán); and (b) thus far all the support he's garnered has come from the opposition, he's made pretty much no dent in Fidesz numbers
