    Journalist Yasir Murtaja killed

Is there any other country where the Army could shoot unarmed demonstrators and there would be such silence from the media

Piece about the history of the protests here

THis is the tweet AE is referring to

Interesting piece on the stirring of mainstream awareness here in the US

It finally happened. In the last day or so, major mainstream voices condemned Israel’s shootings of unarmed Palestinian protesters on March 30, in which 17 were killed.

Chris Hayes did it on MSNBC last night. “A frankly unconscionable use of force.” Ayman Mohyeldin of MSNBC called out the racism in the media’s indifference to the killings. David Rothkopf of the Carnegie Endowment questioned Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state. The New York Times, Washington Post and J Street all criticized the murders (albeit with equivocations), while on WNYC’s Brian Lehrer show, Cornel West said Martin Luther King Jr would have spoken out against Israel’s “massacre” in Gaza, and Brian Lehrer, an Israel supporter who regularly hosts neoconservatives, did not seek to contradict West.
I think Weiss is being overly optimistic here, and we remain miles and miles behind the curve, but something is definitely happening, particularly among the younger generation.

Yeah I read that and think Weiss is very optimistic. But i do think having Trump as such an enthusiastic pro-occupationist, pro-Netanyahuist will make a difference to the coverage.

              Corbyn's statement:

"I have asked for this statement to be read at today's demonstration supporting the Palestinian people in Gaza:

The killing and wounding of yet more unarmed Palestinian protesters yesterday by Israeli forces in Gaza is an outrage.
The majority of the people of the Gaza Strip are stateless refugees, subject to a decade long blockade and the denial of basic human and political rights. More than two thirds are reliant on humanitarian assistance, with limited access to the most basic amenities, such as water and electricity.
They have a right to protest against their appalling conditions and the continuing blockade and occupation of Palestinian land, and in support of their right to return to their homes and their right to self-determination.

Firing live ammunition into crowds of unarmed civilians is illegal and inhumane and cannot be tolerated.

We stand in solidarity with the Israelis who have taken to the streets this last week to protest their government’s actions.
The silence from international powers with the responsibility of bringing a just settlement of the Israel-Palestine conflict must end.
The UK government must support the UN Secretary-General’s call for an independent international inquiry into the killing of protesters in Gaza and review the sale of arms that could be used in violation of international law.
The events in Gaza and the threat of renewed conflict underlines the urgent necessity of genuine negotiations to achieve a viable two-state settlement that delivers peace, justice and security to both Palestinians and Israelis."

The Gaza shooting has been dubbed the "Passover Massacre". That name should stick and have the same impact as "Sharpeville Massacre" or "Soweto Massacre".

Just wanted to throw in my thanks to the regulars on this thread, in particular Nef. It's one to which I have nothing useful to contribute, but I always check out for the news and perspectives I'll not get on the BBC and haven't the time to root out myself. (TBH, I often feel frozen with horror at what the world is happy to ignore.)

Glad you appreciate it, Chris. It’s discussed so little & I just share things I come across.

If you’re on Twitter it’s really worth looking at #jstreet10 for looking at how the debate is developing in the US. It's astonishing how little it's covered. 30 PEOPLE shot dead, a thousand injured

Natalie Portman refuses to travel to Israel to accept the "Israeli Nobel Prize", citing "recent events". It's not the first time she has expressed criticism of Israel, but this is a huge statement. Remember, she was born in Jerusalem and has Israeli citizenship.

Highly recommend watching this video about Yaser Murtaja, who was just another of the people shot (in his case, clearly wearing a helmet and vest marked Press) for the crime of being Palestinian by the vicious murderous brutal occupation forces of Israel.

Piece on Gaza by James Zogby
I traveled to Gaza many times during the 1990’s, in my capacity as co-Chair of Builders for Peace, which was a project launched by Vice President Al Gore to help grow the Palestinian economy. My colleagues and I were unprepared for what we found. Secretary of Commerce Ron Brown, who led one of these delegations, described what he saw as “worse than Soweto.”

As desperate and deplorable as conditions were in Gaza back then, in many ways, those were the “good years”.
