Is there anything I can tweak in the settings so that they show up?

It seems most likely to be caused by settings in your browser that restrict the loading of content from other sites, but is very browser dependent.

I'm going to start a new thread on this.

In the interim, I encourage people to do what I've been doing and to paste the url in below the one that is embedded. People who can't see the tweet do appear to be able to see (and open) the link.
