Hmmm, I rather assume that the pulling out of Syria thing is related almost entirely to a deal with Erdogan to stop releasing evidence of MBS's role in Khashoggi's brutal death. It might not be a terrible thing all things considered, but if I were a Syrian Kurd, i'd be sleeping a lot less soundly tonight

Trump, and Republicans tied to Trump are damaged by this. The only people who think that spunking billions on a comedy wall is worth doing are absolute die-hard trumpistes. Anyone even marginally non-lunatic thinks the idea of shutting down government so the President can have his ineffective racist trophy is ridiculous.

I don't think Democrats are particularly harmed because (a) they're not running government, and the incumbent party is always harmed by shutdowns; (b) they've tried to keep government open; (c) nobody expects them to waste cash on this.

Why should anyone care?

There aren’t any meaningful elections for almost a year.

In any event, the answer is that a shutdown will enthuse the reactionary base and continue to alienate suburban and college educated voters who have generally voted Republican.
