The US are going to help keep Assad in place while pretending to want the opposite. From their narrow POV it's hard to see an alternative: topple Assad and you get a far weaker state than Iraq, in large parts of which ISIS seem to have a lot of autonomy despite Iraq probably having a stronger army that whatever a post-Assad regime could stitch together.
