McCreevy's other big legacy to the plain people of Ireland was the SSIAs, in order to buy Bertie the 2002 election.
A journalist spotted him in the VIP box at a horseracing event, long after he'd left Irish politics. She asked him if he felt even partly responsible for the disaster that had occurred. He replied along the lines of: "Lookit, didn't you have three square meals today and yesterday? And won't you go out for a drink this weekend? What's the problem?"
This was an echo of something he said while in office, to the effect that most Irish people just want to "earn a decent living, be able to afford a few pints, go to a game of football, and have a bit of sex at the weekend".
Surprised that stealth taxes are a meme in Ireland too.
Hang on a second. They are not a meme, they're a daily reality. The first ones were brought in by Fianna Fail more than ten years ago. We've been living with them for a very long time.
As we all have with taxes in general. Taxes are supposed to raise money but not deter you from whatever is being taxed. So they should be reasonably stealthy. By meme I meant the idea stealth taxes were necessarily a con trick. They seem to be working in some sense. Better than here anyway, even though we have far fewer constraints.
There are bad, regressive taxes, sure. But that's a different point.
Leonards Brittan was good at the EU, so you don't need to be a good domestic politician to be good at the EU.
Interestingly, barring Dáil reform, only one Technical Group can be formed, so looking at a Left Bloc of 17 members including Labour, AAA-PBP, Soc Dems and Greens.

Labour's something of a stretch in there, isn't it?

Why do the media print these stupid nicknames in their reporting of the votes?
I don't really see the harm in it, if that's what the person is universally known as, which in this particular case he is.
I'd like them to extend the reporting practice to more well-known politicians too, though, such as Enda "Moron" Kenny, Simon "Shithead" Harris and Alan "Piss-Up In A Brewery" Kelly.

It'd work over here in the UK too. David "Cunt" Cameron. Boris "Cunt" Johnson. Jeremy "Hunt" Cunt.

Give it two years before the usual reverse takeover, by that stage, Catherine Murphy will probably become leader.
Labour are transfer-repellent and will remain so for the foreseeable future, especially with Burton and AK-47 having somehow held on to their seats. The Anti-Austerity Alliance and the Social Democrats won't want to be seen in the same corridor as them, let alone collaborate with them politically.
Then again Pegida's pathetic Irish branch had a farcical launch and was chased and laughed out of town a couple of weeks ago when they tried to march on O'Connell Street. Perhaps I'm being cynical.
i went down to that to see if there'd be any street violence. in front of the GPO there was a big crowd listening to various AAA types take turns on the megaphone to preach against xenophobia. lurking at the corner down by easons was a more interesting group - a couple of dozen young guys in black urban warrior gear with their faces covered, obviously longing for some pegida people to show themselves so that they could kick the shit out of them, and standing amongst them a roughly equal number of police accompanied by big dogs. in the end the anti-pegida group did manage to spot someone who looked like the enemy and they chased them into a shop before the cops pushed in to separate them. it was all rather anticlimactic.
the whole idea of an anti-immigrant party in ireland is fucking stupid. there are hardly any non-white immigrants and besides, we've already got a national front-type party in sinn fein.
obviously sinn fein would see themselves as completely different from pegida - there was a visible shinner presence at the anti-pegida demo - but the fact is they are the party who soak up the nationalist vote that might otherwise go to a european-style foreigners-out movement.

One contradicts the other.
SF are against Pegida and the far-right.
They might have many other faults, but this isn't one.
A lot of their supporters have done work with various European anti-fascist groups, including the Italian (very) far-left.
