The only way to change the policy was to hold a referendum.

erm, we had a citizens assembly, who thrashed out the issue beforehand. the govt laid out its reasons for supporting the referendum, people discussed them at length, they listened to various experts representing both sides, and the govt published the bill that they would implement after the referendum so people knew exactly what they were voting for. People got pissed off at the amount of overseas funding of social media ads, and an informed electorate, came to similar conclusions pretty much right across the country.

I'm sure the brexit referendum was exactly like this.

Delaying the embarrassing result until you hope no-one is looking anymore is ultra-level 'Shy Tory syndrome'.

Thomas Pringle was on pointing the finger at the politicians who were supposed to be in favour of repeal, saying he was the only one who actually went out and did any canvassing. The rest all just sat on their hands, and didn't want to be outflanked to the right. That sounds like something that is massively plausible.

The total lack of opportunities up there for young people (and their mass scattering to other bits of Ireland) can’t have helped either.

Reg and all the other Yes campaign folk are stars. Sometimes this really is a great country of brilliant people.

Seems to be a swell of folk saying this isn’t something to celebrate and the crowds at Dublin Castle are unseemly about such a Solemn Issue.

Fuck that shit. This is a moment of National Liberation. All the wanks that say “identity politics” are a distraction and a turn off for Real People can piss off too. Look at the Clare results. This has been a grassroots movement building on work feminists have been putting in for years. Fuck yer culture wars, now it’s time to get the creepy fuckers out of State schooling.

When they start picketing hospitals and surgeries, I hope The Plain People of Ireland deal with their shit in a Robust manner. Quinn, McGuirk etc won’t go away, it’ll be nasty US tactics that they are now heavily pushing outside Scottish hospitals, let alone the continual applications to the Court of Session for Judicial Review by SPUC (dunno if their suddenly well funded branch is linked to the Irish mob, I’d guess they are) to try and undermine the administration of the law.

Those scumbuckets who used their kids as a shitty emotive prop at their shitty demos with the pictures of aborted fetuses (outside the Dail, the marches), maybe youse can fuck off to redneck bits of America like fucking Dana. The Ireland you want is never coming back. I hope your kids grow up to hate you.

Dawn foster has deleted her twitter account again, which is a shame. She’d be great on this and the shit scared DUPpers.

Last three constituencies to declare will be announced after the declared national count. Eh?

Maybe the Irish Times/Sunday Times etc might want to reconsider their columnist pool again. The frothing likes of Breda o Brien and David Quinn speak to a vanishing minority, why give them acres of print to spout their bullshit?

66.4% for yes, and 33.6% for no. Exit Polls ever so slightly off.

I just heard a happy young Irishwoman on the radio news and now I have tears in my eyes. It seems so rare that something unequivocally positive happens. Thanks to Lang Spoon's Plain People.

I see May is now in another DUP-induced pickle, with calls for Westminster to introduce abortion legislation to NI, but the PM stating it should be devolved to the essentially moribund Stormont, with the ensuing PoC complications.

The 'pickle' has been there since 1967 or at least 1972 when devolution first collapsed. The fault lies with every British Govt since, not because the hapless May and Foster are mutually dependent

Like when Legalization of Homosexuality wasn't enacted for Scotland by Westminster till the early eighties cos it was considered not cool to needlessly rile up the Church of Scotland for the sake of Sodomites. And the (Labour) Scottish Secretary was a tinpot dictator over administratively devolved Scotland, and a bigoted fuck - they didn't dare try and match Stormont re Abortion as it was the Young Thrusting Liberal Scotch Borders MP David Steel that brought it in as a PMB in 67. Otherwise Holyrood might well have had the abortion shite to legalize as well as overturning the equivalent of Clause 28 in its first year.

Recent large scale opinion surveys suggest clear majority support in NI for Abortion Law reform. DUP are bluffing as ever that Fear of a Fenian Planet in General Elections will outweigh this. The broad divide isnt nationality but age, as in the South

And even Age didn’t prove much a factor in the south with 40% yeas in the over 65’s.

Problem will be NI is far more a gerontocracy than the lower 26th. But with no ref needed, would just require Stones from the SDLP to resist their Taigy Farmers against the 21st century wing and the UUP to realize moving right is a fool’s game with TUV dragging the DUP to full on caveman bollocks already. In a crowded field of far right bollocks, why try to muscle in?

UUP and SDLP are largely irrelevant on this as other NI issues. They're just wings of the big 2 now, not alternatives to them. Alliance are more important.

Change can come if Stormont returns or if it doesnt. In the first case, reform or abolish the archaic Petition of Concern. The second? Just pass a bloody law
