Irish TV - the D'Unbelievable Truth

A new, Mayo-based station aimed at the Irish diaspora, will broadcast on Sky and Freesat from May, showing news programmes for each county and country music will feature highly. It all sounds like something out of Father Ted, but you'll be able to chuckle at the result in 18 days.

This would have been a great idea any time up to about 2008, when RTE didn't bother their hole with satellite broadcasts to the diaspora (or even shortwave radio, for that matter), despite all the guff about the importance of the diaspora.

But since about 2008 it is possible for anybody with an internet connection to stream from RTE.ie, TV3.ie and TG4.tv. Most of the domestic stuff (which the diaspora would be interested in) that isn't sensitive to broadcast rights issues is available to everyone outside Ireland. And there are ways around the geoblocks where the others are concerned. Why would somebody bother to put up a dish nowadays?
