There was an accident recently involving pro cyclist Nathan van Hooydonck, who had some sort of heart episode while at the wheel of his car with his pregnant partner in the seat next to him. His foot went down, the car accelerated and there was a nasty crash. As far as I know he was the worst injured and recovered fully (partner and unborn OK).

However the accident did reveal a previously undiagnosed heart issue and he has had to retire from racing with immediate effect.

So, the latest is that the couple pulled into the casino for just a few minutes to change money for the trip to Canada. Apparently he has a 'known medical issue'.

When something like that happens, the human body often goes into spasm. If your foot was resting gently on an accelerator pedal just prior to you going into spasm, well...

The footage of the car flying through the air is incredible. How on earth is that possible by just hitting a kerb?

A similar tragedy happened near my home recently, an 78 year old driving a month old high-end Volvo had a stroke and ended up doing 100kph + in a 50kph zone, the CCTV footage is horrifying as the car is going so fast. It went straight into the back of another car which had stopped at the lights and the killed the 2 passengers in the back of that car, one of whom was a 7 year old girl. We had driven down that street and stopped at those lights about an hour earlier.

2.3 tons of car + high speed basically turns it into a ramp. You're bouncing into the air and momentum does the rest.

The couple have been identified as Kurt and Monica Villani of Grand Island, NY. Both 53. The year and model of Bentley Flying Spur they were driving is apparently under an active recall notice due to a sticking accelerator.

And for marketing executives out there - this is why you don't want an aggressive name for your vehicle or similar device. It may not stay as a metaphor. And then you look awful. Especially if the resulting carnage is very potentially your companies fault.

Is Fox News still saying it's a terrorist attack?

They have buried the story after blaming their initial report on the cops

Yeah, I had no idea that kind of air was achievable for a car outside of films and TV.

The car that exploded this week at a border bridge in Niagara Falls, N.Y., was a 2022 Bentley Flying Spur, the authorities said on Friday, an ultraluxury model capable of reaching a speed of 60 miles per hour in four seconds.

The police identified Kurt P. Villani as the driver and Monica Villani as the passenger. The married couple, who were both 53 and from Grand Island, were the owners of several businesses in western New York. They were headed to a concert in Toronto before the fatal crash, which remained unexplained.

The base model Flying Spur in 2022 came powered by an eight-cylinder engine generating 542 horsepower and weighed 5,137 pounds, according to specifications from Edmunds, which provides data about automobiles for consumers. Used models cost more than $200,000, and Car and Driver magazine said that “the Flying Spur’s unbeatable blend of luxury and performance comes with an eye-watering six-figure price tag.”

The thing that surprised me more than the amount of air the car got was the "explosion". I really thought that cars exploding was a bit of Hollywood bullshit. I expect cars to burn at fuel leaks but I don't expect then to explode on impact. Or, even, turn into fireballs rather than explode.

Cars can and do explode into flames. It just happens a fraction as often as Hollywood would have you believe
