    A Well Regulated Militia . . .

"It would be horribly tragic if my ability to protect myself or my family were to be taken away," Sheats wrote in March on her Facebook page, "but that's exactly what Democrats are determined to do by banning semi-automatic handguns."

R.I.P to those three cops in Baton Rouge.

If any good can come out of their deaths I hope it is the dawning realization that a population armed with military grade weaponry poses a very grave threat to law enforcement. If cops are unable to defend themselves from gun nuts then who is?

It's all well and good for the 2nd amendment types to throw out all the banal slogans about "good guys killing bad guys" but it all looks pretty empty when police officers are dying.

Hopefully one day the silent majority and the moderates pry the gun rights issue out of the hands of the mouth breathers. In the meantime what a sorry state of affairs.

The gun lobby can't explain why good guys, e.g. veterans, keep turning into bad guys. Obviously it is a false binary but also it is not complicated to see that the good guy is still being trained to kill, and any killer can become a bad guy with a gun if he is in a dysfunctioning society as this one clearly is.

Presuming that the gun lobby overlaps to a degree with people interested in veterans affairs, one can neatly square that circle by reference to PTSD, no?

Except that the overlap there is really very small.

The core of the gun lobby is comprised of reactionary nutjobs who love nothing more than to send other people's kids into combat and those who continue to profit from the gun trade.

I thought that I knew just how badly the gun lobby had hobbled gun registration in the US, but I had no idea it was this bad.

There's no telling how many guns we have in America—and when one gets used in a crime, no way for the cops to connect it to its owner. The only place the police can turn for help is a Kafkaesque agency in West Virginia, where, thanks to the gun lobby, computers are illegal and detective work is absurdly antiquated. On purpose. Thing is, the geniuses who work there are quietly inventing ways to do the impossible.

Universities in Kansas will be required to allow concealed guns on campus starting next year. The state attorney general has told Kansas University that they cannot have an exception to ban guns in buildings where rocket fuel and pressurized gas cylinders are present.

The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun causing a massive explosion, killing everyone within the blast radius.

To be fair, Mythbusters showed that shooting pressurized gas canisters doesn't cause them to blow up like it always does in James Bond.

My guess is that there usually isn't, but I can't be sure.

But what is so appalling is to think that there are enough of these events that the question could be answered without worrying that the sample size is too small. Because the sample size isn't small.

                                          That is correct

A "second shooter" is reported in a large proportion of these incidents, but those reports almost always prove to be misguided.

The police have lifted the "shelter in place", though all classes have been cancelled for the rest of today.

So, not only was there no "second shooter", there wasn't even a "first shooter", as the original attack featured a man using his vehicle as a weapon and then attacking people with a knife or machete.

Texas allows open carry of swords, axes, ninja throwing stars, etc.

Swordsmen and swordswomen come in two categories: those who are highly trained and those who are often deemed crazy. This tells a would-be opponent that a citizen armed with a sword is skilled, crazy, or perhaps both and thus has the potential to de-escalate a situation before blood needs to be drawn. We also consider a sword to be superior to a firearm in dis-arming an opponent, with options to dis-arm at the wrist, elbow, shoulder, or anywhere in between.
