this is an absolutely insane building, it's like something out of star wars - you look up and would not be surprised if you saw two jedi knights having it out with light sabers
It was built after WWII when the town was razed by bombs
Ironically St Joseph is the patron saint of carpenters and the only wood in the place is the chairs

Never heard of that place before, looks interesting
I went there for the first time last autumn and was blown away by the sheer size of the place (it's something like 5 km long).
In view of the recent construction mishaps in Berlin (airport) and Hamburg (philharmonic hall), the media have been asking why Germany can't build stuff like it used to. It obviously can, though; Prora was just as great a fuck-up as either of the modern-day examples.

When I was a young man, I was fond of Didcot Power Station (when approached from the west face), as it meant that I'd soon be arriving in London.

Radio Kootwijk in Holland
A huge edifice in the middle of nowhere(or as close as such a thing is possible in Holland).
Built in the 20s to house a massive long - wave transmitter capable of communicating with the colonies in Indonesia. By the time they finished building it, technological advances meant the equipment necessary could be housed in a small garage so it was effectively obselete.
The interior is a an Art Deco palace, with beautiful floors and doors. It's now used for conferences and parties.

My favourite architect is probably Canadian Ron Thom. His trademark style is aggregate in concrete, poured into rough wooden forms to that the concrete picks up the wood grains and cutting details. It's stunning. Cold, but stunning.
Trent University in Peterborough and the Toronto Zoo are two good examples of his work and style. I'll dig around for a good picture. Trent is lovely, but I can't find a good photo that really shows the detail. It's a real up-close thing, and he doesn't do soaring structures that make for good pictures.
