Most names successively given to a place

    Akmoly (1830-1832) , Akmolinsk (1832-1961) Tselinograd (1961-1991), Akmola (1991-1997), Astana (1997-2019), Nur-sultan (2019- ?)

Six, must be a record, surely?

I suspect that somewhere in Ukraine, Belarus or possibly Poland will have more.

I mean, your town only starts in 1830, we've got cities that have 2000+ years of history to be messing around in.

Wiki has a long, but necessarily incomplete list.

An early contender (the Classical Greek- Roman - Byzantine -Ottoman - Habsburg - Communist combo is hard to beat)
      • Kendros (Kendrisos/Kendrisia) → Odryssa → Eumolpia → Philipopolis → Trimontium → Ulpia → Flavia → Julia → Paldin/Ploudin → Poulpoudeva → Filibe → Plovdiv

I assume we aren't allowed sports stadia with changing sponsors here?

Flicking through ursus' wiki page, I'm left wondering if there's anywhere in Illinois that hasn't changed it's name!

I do wonder what was going on there, as the very extensive list doesn't even include Native American names, which must have existed for at least some settlements. The four "Centervilles" are also curious.

Having Bulgarian inlaws, I saw the thread title and thought straight away of Plovdiv. Glad to see I wasn't wrong!
