    Murdoch scum

    Boom.

In the letter, which was written four years ago but published only on Tuesday, Goodman claims that phone hacking was "widely discussed" at editorial meetings at the paper until Coulson himself banned further references to it; that Coulson offered to let him keep his job if he agreed not to implicate the paper in hacking when he came to court; and that his own hacking was carried out with "the full knowledge and support" of other senior journalists, whom he named.

      Ba-boom.
Two versions of his letter were provided to the committee. One which was supplied by Harbottle & Lewis has been redacted to remove the names of journalists, at the request of police. The other, which was supplied by News International, has been redacted to remove not only the names but also all references to hacking being discussed in Coulson's editorial meetings and to Coulson's offer to keep Goodman on staff if he agreed not to implicate the paper.
Apparently, this is what NI considers full cooperation.

        Indeed.

That little tidbit is almost certainly the reason why Tom Crone resigned.

        James Murdoch is toast.

Hmm. The Harbottle covering letter is throwing up a 404 at the CMS website, and the main letter is missing page 8.

Can you be locked up for lying to parliament? Or is it just frowned on?

Gah. More missing pages. Looks like the letter was printed double sided and some muppet forgot to scan both sides.

Does anyone have any ideas who else might be publishing the letters (presumably after having been sent them by Watson)? The Graun only has the Goodman letter posted.

Ha ha, brilliant. A delightfully abridged part of the NI standards of business conduct, illustrated with:

                  1) A picture of a Fox News presenter, captioned "Conducting yourself with integrity"

                  2) A still from Titanic.

OK, I've found the Goodman letter that NI sent. It's not quite as bad as the Graun makes out. The redactions are more extensive than Harbottle's, including for instance the words "daily editorial conference", but it's still clear Goodman is alleging wider involvement and knowledge at the NOTW. They can probably argue that the redactions were necessary because the identities of people at the editorial conference would be compromised.

Of course, none of this diminishes Harbottle's own evidence.

They weren't under oath when they gave evidence, were they?

Over here, you can go to jail for perjury for lying to Congress when under oath, or for contempt of Congress for refusing to testify/produce documents, etc.

The UK appears to have contempt of Parliament concept, though I'm not sure if there have been any recent criminal prosecutions.

In British English anyway it's a fairly uncommon technical term. Wouldn't expect it to be used or understood by a non-lawyer.

It's certainly obscure over here, but has no legal connotation at all.

Elements of this don't seem that outrageous (it's not completely rare that 'compromise agreement' payments following dismissal are staggered), but the fact that Coulson was still getting in-service healthcare and other benefits having left 'in disgrace' is certainly an eye-opener, as of course are the fact that he was also on the Tory party payroll.
