I'm off to Vienna this evening for a conference. I've got most of Friday free, so what should I see/do. I haven't been properly since I was very little.

Start off doing the tram ride round the Ringstrasse in both directions. Then just wander round. It's a brilliant place. The prater is a long way out of town and the view from the Ferris wheel isn't great, so is only really worth it as a Third Man pilgrimage.
Oh, and Schonbrunn and the Hofburg are both truly stunning.

The Wien Museum in Karlsplatz has an exhibit on legendary football venues at the moment.
The Kunsthaus is lovely if you like quirky architecture.
I enjoyed working on my laptop at the Cafe Central, pretending I was Trotsky (he didn't use a laptop, but it is where he edited his newspaper in exile prior to WWI).
The Museumsquartier has some amazing stuff. i really liked the museum devoted to historical musical instruments but for the life of me I can't remember what it's called. But the website for the MQ as a whole is here.

What Purves said.
The Kunsthistoriches is one of the world's greatest art museum; if you have any interest in Breughel you HAVE to go. If you like Klimt and the Secession, the City Art Museum in the centre. If you like Otto Wagner, try to get out to the Kirche am Steinhof (on the grounds of an asylum, but open to the public, check the hours before you go).
Go to at least one serious cafe. Our personal favourite is Demel, even if it is a bit warm for their hot chocolate mit schlag. If you choose to go to one of the others, at least walk by Demel so that you can see what they've done with the Marzipan display.
Another out of town option is a Heurige on the fringes of the Weinerwald (accesible by tram). It's early for the wine they specialise in, but it's still a very pleasant way to while away an hour or two.
Any classical music that may be on is likely to be of very high quality, should you be interested.
Thread from the old board here.
I am very jealous.

What the hell is wrong with the Austrians?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/7400767.stm
An Austrian man has handed himself into police after allegedly hacking his wife, seven-year-old daughter, parents and father-in-law to death with axe.

Well, I ended up with less free time than I'd hoped. I did the tram, and wandered through the old town from Landstrasse/Mitte to the Museumsquartier, stopping off at Demels to pick up a sachertorte for my mate's birthday. It was too busy to have anything there. It's a fucking beautiful city though.
