Reading the report, Britain's equaliser not only moved them up from outside the top two to tournament winners and sent Hungary the other way, but also somehow put Italy in front of Kazakhstan for second spot and promotion alongside Britain. Something to do with h2h records I guess. It all sounds like a madly tight scenario.

The link shows the game were consecutive rather than concurrent. Only one rink available, presumably. If I've read the report correctly it looks like Italy needed to win their game (as they did), and then hope Britain avoided defeat. If Hungary had held on to win, it looks like all four sides would have finished on 9 points, and that would apparently have promoted Hungary and Kazakhstan. If Italy's win also came via a last minute goal, talk about razor fine margins!Last edited by Janik; 29-04-2018, 09:36.

TBH I find the obsession with the draft well OTT. Particularly the "when should we start to deliberately tank?" discussions that starts among bottom feeders after the all-star game. A high first round pick is nice but no guarantee of anything — just ask Edmonton. While, at the other extreme, Vegas are doing very nicely with a collection of second hand cast-offs.

Quite. The Oilers had a string of #1s before MacDavid, and obtaining them hasn't made made a lick of difference, which is my point. One, or even two, top picks doesn't compensate for organisational deficiencies. It merely prolongs the agony.

Yes, and there are also very real differences between "generational talents" like McDavid and Matthews (and likely Dahlin) and more "run of the mill" top picks who can be very valuable Top Six forwards or Top Four defencemen, but can't transform a team on their own.
It's very different from basketball, which is where the concept of "tanking" first developed, and where one great player can have a much greater impact.

After the high of the national side's promotion, more rink shenanigans in the UK leagues. Edinburgh Capitals lose their ice time at the Murrayfield rink to a group looking to resurrect the Murrayfield Racers (who played there from 1952 to 1996 under various guises) name - who were themselves superseded by the Capitals in 1998. However, the Elite League has rejected the Racers' application leaving no Edinburgh team with both a rink and a league place currently and a spare slot in the top tier.

I wouldn't joke about it. This is the EIHL, and preserving the cannon fodder is what it tries to do. (For example letting the Hull Stingrays go and the next day they popped up as the Manchester Storm.) However, with Guildford and MK joining, Edinburgh has become disposable.

A quick update about Switzerland, ambivalence in Zurich....The Lions have won the league, beating Lugano 4-3 in the series but Kloten have gone down after losing their barrage series against the pointless clowns of Rapperswill (I had a very bad experience there once....) which is seriously bad news for this historic club as their finances were on the brink already...

It was a weird set of playoffs. ZSC only finished seventh in the regular season, but beat Zug (2d) and Bern (1st by 11 points) before defeating Lugano (who had finished 4th)
Kloten had been poor all season finishing ten points adrift of Ambri-Piotta and being awful in the playouts. They still almost survived, as they were up three games to two on Lakers in the relegation series before losing the last two (including game seven in overtime).

Rapperswill is the home base of Switzerland biggest circus, Knie so the clown comment is quite apt...
Kloten has a very strong junior section, one that has given the national team quite a few players, I do hope they can salvage that...
