    Gerry Cranham

I was very sad to read that the brilliant sports photographer Gerry Cranham passed away at the weekend.

His work spanned most sports and he's behind some really iconic images of the 1960s and 1970s, so if you're not familiar with the name it's worth a search.

There was an exhibition of his work at the Michael Hoppen Gallery in West London a few years back, of which some details and images are still online here. There's also an Instagram account for his archive which is well worth a follow if you're on there.

As it happens, on this day in 1975 Cranham was present to photograph AC Milan's UEFA Cup tie at Athlone Town, from which he delivered some great images, like these and these.

Ah, good old St Mels Park. It was certainly a leveller, and Athlone Town should have won that game, with probably the most famous penalty miss in league of Ireland history.

    R.I.P to a wonderful talent.

The Guardian obituary has been published, headlined by *that* photograph:

It includes a photo of Cranham himself, looking wonderfully 1970s.

That Rangers-Celtic game in 1961 ... it's recognizable as a modern game, but there's a spectator in goal?
