    Tom Daley

The 29-year-old has announced he intends to come out of retirement, with his eyes firmly set on the Paris Olympics. On paper, this makes zero sense, in that diving, like gymnastics, is a young person's sport, so bowing out by finally winning a gold medal seemed a fitting legacy, whereas reversing that decision essentially leaves him in a gold or bust scenario when it comes to finishing on his own terms.

I'd have thought he'd make more money in front of the camera for the BBC than jumping in the pool? Diving doesn't look like a sport dripping with big corporate sponsorship.

Maybe he likes diving and misses it?

I think there's too much emphasis placed on going out at the top, as if competing at a lower level than before somehow ruins your legacy. It doesn't.
