Pitchfork is reporting that reggae producer and sound system operator Jah Shaka has passed away. Here he is at work with his sound system in the film, Babylon.

One of those people most people into music under 60 in London will have some kind of experience of. I remember a great afternoon in Victoria Park, a London free-festival against racism and Jah Shaka had his own tent, playing all afternoon with one deck and getting the microphone out when he turned the record over, to sing along to the dub version. Nothing could be better.Comment

It is interesting to see so many of the sound system djs working with a single turntable and then using a noisemaker of some kind (not the technical term but I'm drawing a blank on the technical term)--alarm, horn, etc.--when it was time to flip the record.
