Terrible news, although he'd been ill for a while. He was the coolest, a good guy, and he was still working.

Oh no. Unofficial fifth member of Japan, was on their 1982 tour I went to and collaborated brilliantly with Sylvian.

Not to mention that he did enormous amounts without them of course.

            RIP, 71 is terribly young.

Commemorating with a listen to the brilliant B-2 Unit.

A question I've been pondering recently: is YMO's Tong Poo the first ever appearance of the now-everywhere oowa oowa party noise?

Nice one ad hoc, not only does OTF have a depth of knowledge, it's quick in delivering it!

The thing I most remember him from is acting and scoring Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence. There's something hauntingly beautiful about that soundtrack.

I didn't know that Takahashi died (too) earlier this year. Fuck.

Still maybe the greatest, coolest short concert on youtube:

You never need to miss an important pop music death with this monthly thing I do. A new one, covering the deaths in March, is dropping tomorrow (Tuesday) morning. Naturally with as few lines about Sakomoto.

Terribly sad news – he was an absolute master.

It's his soundtrack work I'm most familiar with (it's a genre I absolutely love). His claustrophobic, oppressive score for The Revenant is absolute genius, and it still baffles and entertains me to this day that he was hired to score the Nic Cage vehicle Snake Eyes, and delivered an absolutely epic, sprawling classic that the otherwise dreadful film absolutely did not deserve.
