Songs that you rediscovered in 2013-2020

In Fopp Records on Monday for half an hour before a train ride. Purchased an album I've wanted for a few weeks (Lightning Bolt's new one, not relevant for this thread).

What is relevanter is that I was drawn to a naff "20 Alternative 80s Classics" CD in the queue aisle for £3 with any (other) purchase. Taking a disdainful look (ugh, Lullaby by Bob Smith, All About Sodding Eve), it had Pete Shelley's Homosapien hidden 16 tracks down. This all meant that it became a fair addition to the CD selection for any car journeys. With the rest looking ok, nothing marvellous, I felt the investment well worth it just for Homosapiens, one of my genuine all-time favourites.

The song I rediscovered was the track that followed Homosapien on this compilation, Marc Almond's The Boy Who Came Back.

For some reason, despite being pretty much immersed in electronic music, I've never really investigated Detroit Techno.

However, a few weeks back I heard 'The Narcissist' by Kenny Larkin for the first time.

      Oh my!

Now trying to rapidly catch up on all things Kenny Larkin.

What's the next logical step, Detroit Techno-wise, then, OTF hive mind?

        For each person you should get a different answer on this one. Off the top of my head;

Jeff Mills (I), Underground Resistance (I), Carl Craig (I like the Paperclip People stuff, there was a period during the mid to late nineties where many of things he remixed were particularly decent, 69 stuff too), Kevin Saunderson (KMS label). Early innovative stuff like Juan Atkins's No UFO's.

I'm giving Treeless Plain by The Triffids a spin, having bought it cheap in Fopp a while ago. It is very enjoyable. The twangy, occasionally chiming arrangements are surprisingly reminiscent of the Birthday Party in parts, although the songs themselves are rather more accessible.

Majestic synths 'n' socialism combo from 1984, in the shape of Fiat Lux's Blue Emotion.

Well an album actually. I bought this in 1980 when it came out, and listened to it heavily in the next couple of years. Then I pretty much stopped, at some point the LP disappeared and I had never put it on a cassette. So having just bought this on CD, I realise it could be over 30 years since I've heard it.

              Looking forward to reacquainting:

They're now considered a bit lightweight, it seems, but boy did they leave behind a couple of top notch singles. And this is one of them.

A song that I have never thought about, "Can You Feel It?" by The Jackson 5 came on the radio earlier today. For the first time I noticed how effing brilliant the bit is where Michael Jackson comes in for the first time, about 1 minute in singing:

"All the colors of the world should be
                        Lovin' each other wholeheartedly..."

With that driving beat behind it, it's funky as hell. I'm surprised I have never noticed it before.

Sonic Youth's Daydream Nation LP accompanied my choppy commute home and made it almost a joy.

Wondering what other SY LP's I should go for next as I've only just really started to bother with them.

I must revisit Daydream Nation too.

I came into SY at 'Sister', backtracked to 'EVOL' and continued until 'Dirty'.

For me, 'Sister' is the favourite probably due to its sort of lo-fi ness.

I don't contribute to this thread much simply because 'catch-up mode' is my default state and it would be hard to whittle down the stuff I've heard. (Also, my preferred genres of Electropop and Electro are pretty niche, so I know most people won't be interested.)

However, after putting it off for a long time (mostly due to what I thought was a crap name and poor cover art) I've been catching up on the stuff by Fleck E.S.C. :

                                'Switch On, Switch Off'

                                'Starting Point'

Depends what you really liked about DN. After that they went more conventionally punk/grunge - still lots of texture, but relatively standard song structures. No more tracks like 'Providence' (that I know of, anyway).

EVOL is beautiful in places, all atmosphere and mystery. Sister is where they most successfully mashed the garage rock and the avant gardism imo.

Their early records are really noisy and harsh; I like it, but it can be an acquired taste.

One of those songs that latched onto my consciousness years ago and bobbles to the surface once in a while. Listened to it umpteen times recently.

Okay - not so much *re*discovered as just plain discovered.

                                                  Colder.

Specifically his album from last year, 'Many Colours', from which this - 'Turn Your Back' was the (rather excellent) first single.

You see, as previously mentioned on another thread, I went up to the Sensoria festival in Sheffield at the end of September and Colder were supporting Michael Rother. I had only heard one Colder track beforehand and thought that he sounded appropriately 'Motorik'. However, his stage show was one of the best 'understated' performances I've seen and quite different from that one other track I'd heard. I loved it, frankly.

Sadly, on exploring the rest of his oeuvre, it was only the aforementioned 'Many Colours' album that really had that vibe he'd portrayed on stage. His 'twin' albums from this year, 'Goodbye' and 'The Rain', are very different, with him seemingly disappearing down an Angelo Badalamenti rabbit hole. Sad, as far as I'm concerned, but it was still great while it lasted.

Just echo and chorus isn't it?

Anyway, Echo & The Bunnymen. I'd always liked the idea of them, but although I bought their first two albums I didn't find myself listening to them much as soon swapped them at a local record exchange. Then I recently came across The Works collection and realised how good some of the songs were that I'd forgotten about, especially All That Jazz, Porcupine, Nocturnal Me and Lips Like Sugar.
