Instruments associated with a single artist

Not sure how long a list this is.

    Ray Manzarek—Fender Rhodes Piano Bass
Peter Kember (Sonic Boom)—the Vox Starstream
    Godley & Creme's Gizmotron
    Brian Jones—Vox Phantom Mk III
    Dion Dublin's Zube?

Not so much an artist, but the only time I've heard a glass harmonica was from the theme from Picture Box.

I believe that Manzarek used the piano bass live, but tended to use either a Vox or Gibson combo organ on recordings.

They used a session bass player (whose name escapes me) on recordings to beef up the bass parts. But he played the piano bass live.

Mozart wrote the most famous piece that is dedicated to the instrument

It probably is a gross injustice to the instrument but I'm pretty certain that for a huge number of Western rock fans sitar = Ravi Shankar = sitar.

Einsturzende Neubauten - any random object they can get their hands on.

In terms of popular music rather than classical, flute = Ian Anderson

For me, the Danelectro is indelibly associated with Syd Barrett. The Rickenbacker bass, Lemmy.

Janik, I was thinking of posting exactly the same (and was listening to Jethro Tull today).

I'm in the same boat, though I would have heard of neither the glass harmonica nor Picture Box were it not for a fascinating and enjoyable episode of the podcast Jaffa Cakes for Proust, called 'Hauntology vs Millennial Nostalgia', which touched on it – which my brother introduced me to a couple of years ago and which proved to be my gateway to listening to podcasts in general. I still have no idea what the instrument looks like, but crikey it's a distinctive sound.

I thought you were going to say the Stylophone here Jah, as it was one of the first things to pop into my mind on seeing the thread title.

By the way, I must correct a gross error in this post, Stumpy. As any fule no, Dion's vaunted percussion box thing is called the Dube.

I'm deeply sorry. My condolences to Dion and his family.

Dunno, Paul McCartney played one in mid-period Beatles and in Wings. Although he went back to the Violin Bass.

John Lennon was associated with the Epiphone Casino.

John Cale is the only exponent of the electric viola I can think of (in popular music). Or any viola for that matter.

I've always associated the flute with Florian Schneider.

It did indeed cross my mind, but Bowie's use of the Stylophone on Space Oddity is clearly more iconic than anything Harris might've done with it. (Among other examples, Kraftwerk also use one on Pocket Calculator.)

                                              Thankfully not.

Although NIgel Tufnel plays his guitar with a violin.
