Yeah, that was it. "Without electrical current" meant take off the 'i', to get "naom", which backwards, or 'up', is 'moan', which is a synonym for beef. The question mark was supposed to hint at something tricky going on. I take it from the widespread bafflement that this was an unfair clue?

As you've asked: I think it was slightly too tricky, in that one had to do a fairly convoluted bit of "inverted wordplay" to solve it. As you hint, the ideal even with a hard clue is for it to be easy with hindsight, so that the solver knows for sure when they've cracked it; this didn't quite have that, for my money.

But your standards are routinely so high that we're spoiled...
