Of those 18 only Bailey (unused) and Martin (1 game, Fenwick preferred) made the plane 4 years later.
I remember "Ron's 22" being the oldest squad as ye plumped for experience over youth, a decision which looked sound in the first group stage, but less good afterwards.

The preponderance of players in the list from England, Italy and Germany presumably shows the strength of both club and national teams - though this is a dubious claim as far as England are concerned - and also that if you a Dane or whatever playing abroad for a big club you were practically guaranteed international status.

If we expand to runners up, I believe Rossi was in three finals 1993 to 95. Wiki says he was called up twice but did not play. He was omitted from the USA 94 squad by his former club manager. Maybe he didn't get enough practice saving shots behind that Milan defence?Last edited by Satchmo Distel; 04-12-2020, 12:07.

Some players, such as the Italian Fabio Cuducini, a goalie, were unlucky never to have been capped (he coincided, among others, with Dino Zoff).
2 others on the list share a record, according to wiki:
"...together with Bayern Munich player of the 1970s and 1980s Bernd D?rnberger, he [Heinz Stuy] holds the record for being the player having won the most major club titles without having ever played for the national team of his country."
Who was the Dutch first-choice keeper during these years?
Oleguer Presas and Loris Karius are pretty average and there has to be some doubt wheher the former would have been happy to play for Spain at all.
Sebastiano Rossi seems most unfortunate never to have been picked for his country. After all:
"Rossi also holds the record for the fewest goals conceded by a goalkeeper during a single 34-match Italian league season, with 11."
