Of those 18 only Bailey (unused) and Martin (1 game, Fenwick preferred) made the plane 4 years later.

I remember "Ron's 22" being the oldest squad as ye plumped for experience over youth, a decision which looked sound in the first group stage, but less good afterwards.

So Rotherham nearly had a reject there? Bugger, that would've been something.

2006: Oleguer (Barcelona) never played for Spain. Since then, I can't find anyone.

The Iceland game which is quoted in the Morley and Withe stats in June1982 was originally supposed to be a B international and featured the following line up:

1 Joe Corrigan, 2 Viv Anderson, 3 Phil Neal (c), 4 Dave Watson, 5 Russell Osman, 6 Terry McDermott, 7 Glenn Hoddle, 8 Alan Devonshire (12 Steve Perryman 70), 9 Peter Withe, 10 Cyrille Regis (13 Paul Goddard 40), 11 Tony Morley

It was however upgraded to a full international (not sure whether retrospectively or at the time). The next day the "A" team (not that one) played Finland with the line up being:

Ray Clemence 59 33 Tottenham Hotspur
Mick Mills 37 33 Ipswich Town
                    Phil Thompson 35 28 Liverpool
Alvin Martin 4 23 West Ham United
                    Kenny Sansom 23 23 Arsenal
                    Steve Coppell 65' 36 26 Manchester United
                    65' Trevor Francis 27 28 Manchester City
                    Bryan Robson 65' 19 25 Manchester United

Would a lot of this be down to the restrictions on foreign players and the reliance on home grown ones?

                                A cracking thread this.

Great stuff sporting. I think ignoring subs makes eminent sense, specially these days with 23 or more man squads. Even the megaclubs might not have three full international keepers

Bill Foulkes will take some beating for the gap between cap (1954, his only cap) and European Cup win (1968). And also probably one of the oldest outfield winners (36 years and nearly 5 months).

The preponderance of players in the list from England, Italy and Germany presumably shows the strength of both club and national teams - though this is a dubious claim as far as England are concerned - and also that if you a Dane or whatever playing abroad for a big club you were practically guaranteed international status.

If we expand to runners up, I believe Rossi was in three finals 1993 to 95. Wiki says he was called up twice but did not play. He was omitted from the USA 94 squad by his former club manager. Maybe he didn't get enough practice saving shots behind that Milan defence?

Jermaine Pennant, 2007. Probably Liverpool's best player in that final.

Some players, such as the Italian Fabio Cuducini, a goalie, were unlucky never to have been capped (he coincided, among others, with Dino Zoff).

2 others on the list share a record, according to wiki:

"...together with Bayern Munich player of the 1970s and 1980s Bernd D?rnberger, he [Heinz Stuy] holds the record for being the player having won the most major club titles without having ever played for the national team of his country."

Who was the Dutch first-choice keeper during these years?

Oleguer Presas and Loris Karius are pretty average and there has to be some doubt wheher the former would have been happy to play for Spain at all.

Sebastiano Rossi seems most unfortunate never to have been picked for his country. After all:

"Rossi also holds the record for the fewest goals conceded by a goalkeeper during a single 34-match Italian league season, with 11."

I often think Ferguson kept players like May, Greening, Darren Gibson or Tom Cleverley in his squads so that when debates about great managers ensue, people will look at these names and think "Jesus, he won major trophies with this lot?" thus elevating his reputation even more.
