so much for needing to have his.....
In these times of oil oligarchs, Arab wealth conglomerates, debt driven takeovers, fan revolts at famous old clubs and the like, isn't it more than a little comforting to see someone as unremarkable as Mike Phelan get the no 2 job at Manchester United?
It's like a nice cup of tea after a very hard day.

Phelan had been well regarded while at Norwich, who had a good team under Ken Brown at the time, and he had made it into the England squad the year before United bought him.
It didn't really work out as a signing though. He was pretty pedestrian for them most of the time.

The only real memory I have of Mike Phelan playing for Manchester United is him getting smashed to bits setting up Eric Cantona's first goal for the club. As Eric celebrated with his teammates, Phelan was sparked out on the floor.
'The best part of twenty years at the club', and that's my only memory of it. Ah well.
