Of the eleven sides to have completed the League and FA Cup double in England, only three - Preston North End in 1890, and Manchester United in 1997 and 2000 - retained the championship after a double-winning year. Only Spurs, in 1962, and Arsenal, in 2003, went on to retain the Cup. So six out of the eleven failed to win a trophy at all the year after their clean sweep, including Liverpool in 1987, Man U in 1995, Arsenal in 1999 and Chelsea in 2011. I wonder if there is something about the psychology of winning everything, that takes the hunger away for more?
