Question - Argentine clubs v British clubs

Asking for a friend (no, really, I am).

Does anyone have a clue how/where I'd find a rundown of all matches played between Argentine and British clubs from 1931* until the present day? It's not a huge number of matches, it's true, but Intercontinental Cups aside some of them are hard enough to track down that my friend is having a little difficulty with them. Any ideas?

*When Argentine football became professional. Opposite to everything else in Argentine football, the amateur era stats for this have been much easier to track down than the professional era ones, for some reason.

It definitely does. I'm not sure it's so authoritative that it would be useful for this, though - I gather he's writing some sort of historical investigation for a proper sports publication here. I'll suggest it to him, though. Thanks!

If anyone else has any tips, do keep them coming.

Question - Argentine clubs v British clubs

You're talking about tour matches and pre-season tournament games? Will be very tough to get any sort of comprehensive list. I looked at doing something similar for Santos tours during the Pelé years and gave up.

Most of the big pre-season tournaments have their histories on Wikipedia at least.

dalliance the recent-ish Pele biography included an appendix with every single one of his 1000+ career goals, including every one scored in a a friendly... that obviously doesn't mean that it covers every game he (or Santos) played, but it a good start and will highlight each tour at least.

You may well have this already as it's pre-1931 but Plymouth Argyle did a tour of South America.

The fantastic Argyle site GreensOnScreen covers it well here.

RSSSF list of early British and Irish tours.

This book appears to be a good source:

Historia del Fútbol Argentino, various authors, Editorial Eiffel, Buenos Aires, 1958.

Thanks ursus, I'll show him that link as it does at least go past 1931... he owns a bookshop specialising in books about the history of Argentine football, so it's probably safe to assume he's familiar with the book you mention!

Yeah, that's a very famous tour around these parts!

Question - Argentine clubs v British clubs

RSSSF has been a useful resource for me when I have tried to find information about early friendlies between clubs or odd matches like national teams playing club sides prior to WC tournaments. But sometimes I have had to search club sites. In your friend's case, that could mean a lot of work going club by club. However, if he's looking to make his own book (perhaps something like the various statistical record books produced by Romeo Ionescu) then I guess he would be committing to a lengthy project.

FYI, sent a PM to you Sam.
