People in Football quoting philosophers (excluding Joey Barton)

Walter Sabatinia, a former Roma sporting director, has referred to Mourinho as being an "opium of the masses"!

"[Jose Mourinho] is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. [He] is the opium of the masses".

Seems a fair enough comparison to me.

      Today is Marx's birthday.

I wonder if Sabatini was aware of that. He is famous for smoking, but I don't know his politics.

That is one of the most misunderstood quotes ever, though. Marx wasn't saying that religion was inherently bad; you could just as easily apply the quote to the black church under Jim Crow. It makes life bearable until a truly revolutionary consciousness can be developed - I don't think it has to be something that suppresses consciousness in Marx's formulation.
