I had totally forgotten there was a Luton player called Kirk Stephens - 227 appearances according to Wiki. Coventry City youth player.

Fuck, that's awful news. The man responsible for one of the most famous dances in football.

      RIP.

He lived round the corner, in a terraced house, in early 80s Hertfordshire.

[DG]His sons were at the same primary school as me.[/DG]

                RIP.

His managerial career included Atlético’s doblete of ‘96. No mean feat given the lean years that preceded it.

Sad news about Raddy Antic. Your comment about Kirk Stephens reminded me of one of the dullest matches I ever attended, Villa 0 Luton 0 in the eighties. It was a dire game, with literally one incident- possibly the only shot on target, when Mark Walters spun and hit a shot which was going inside the right hand post, only for Stephens, on the goal line, to deflect it round the post with his right arm. We got a corner. Can't remember whether Antic was playing that day, though there's every chance, but I'm fairly sure Les Sealey was in goal, and I guess it would have been the era of Ricky Hill and Brian Stein. Odd that you tend to remember terrible matches with more clarity than those that were just mediocre.

Heh, I was wondering about how many posts about the final day of the 82-83 first division would I have to read, before someone would mention that he's also one of the most important figures in the history of a major european club, or the only man to manage Both Madrid clubs and Barcelona. In fairness, even I've seen that footage enough times since for it to be the first mental image I had of him as well.
