Favourite (and less favoured) films of 2018

    Favourite:

    Close seconds:
    Avengers: Infinity War
    Isle of Dogs

    Also enjoyed:
    Black Panther
    The Death of Stalin
    Deadpool 2
    Incredibles 2
    Mission: Impossible – Fallout
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
    Ant-Man and the Wasp
    Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

    Okay:
    Venom
    Solo: A Star Wars Story
    The Equalizer 2
    Bohemian Rhapsody

    Disappointing:
    Ready Player One
    Pacific Rim Uprising
    Tomb Raider
    Early Man
    The Cloverfield Paradox
The House with a Clock in Its Walls

    Dogshit:
    Den of Thieves
There are likely worse films, but I'm never gonna give films such as Peter Rabbit and the latest Robin Hood film to ever have the chance to burn themselves on to my retinas.

    Really enjoyed
    Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle
    Coco
    Solo
    Ant-Man and The Wasp

    Thought were OK
    Black Panther
    Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
    Incredibles 2

    Disappointed
    Ready Player One
    Avengers: Infinity War

    Instantly forgettable
    Ocean's 8

Probably the two best films I saw for the first time this year were Casablanca and Some Like it Hot.

My local arthouse screen is always a few weeks behind in showing new releases, so I might need to come back in a month or so to edit my post once I've caught up with a few more 2018 films I want to see, but for now:

      brilliant:
      You Were Never Really Here
      Lady Bird
      Custody

      great:
      Beast
      Annihilation
      Phantom Thread
      First Reformed

      v. good:
      The Shape of Water
      Widows
      Leave No Trace
      Unsane

      curate's egg:
      Suspiria
      Hereditary
      I, Tonya

      hated it:
      A Quiet Place

On Saturday I went to see Mary Poppins Returns. Probably not the best film of the year, but quite frankly harder to think of one I enjoyed more this year.

You Were Never Really Here and Blackkklansman were probably my films of the year. Also an honourable mention for Sicario 2 and especially its soundtrack.

Point of order, an October 2017 release so surely not eligible?

It was listed in Wikipedia's Films of 2018 as March 2018, but on closer inspection they appear to be listed by US release date. The timeline didn't seem right at the time but I didn't bother to look closer. It also explains why you listed The Shape of Water and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and I didn't, both of which I rated highly.

I saw 'Bumblebee' last night. It was OK but not as good as I hoped it would be after seeing the trailer.

Obviously I see a lot fewer films than most on here but the ones that you have all mentioned that I've seen

                        Excellent : Three billboards...
                        Very good : Blackkklansman
                        Good : American Animals*
Good in parts : Bohemian Rhapsody
                        Meh: Guernsey literary potato thingy
Standard action movie fare, well made but saying nothing to me about my life, with good and rubbish bits in as befits the genre: Oceans 8; Infinity War; Mission Impossible umpteen

*no-one mentioned this one but it was pretty well made

I saw three films in the cinema this year and enjoyed them all even thought none were classics - BoRap, Three Billboards.. and Solo.

                          As you were.

Saw Casablanca for the first time last year and really enjoyed it. Some Like It Hot was my favourite film ever until I conceded I was being arch and, of course, it was "Star Wars"

Can’t think quite where to put this but sad to see that the BBC have managed to crash what was a near-perfect format due to terrible presenter and scheduling choices :

                                Best, by miles: Roma
Will watch again: Isle of dogs, Deadpool 2, You were never really here
Not brilliant but enjoyed childishly: Ready player one
Boring and almost turned off: First man, Black Panther
                                Nice surprise: Lady Gaga's acting

Most memorable documentary: Grace Jones-Bloodlight and Bami, Studio 54

Note to self: Don't watch another movie about famous painters. At eternity's gate with Willem Dafoe about van Gogh was predictably tedious, as was Pollock, Mr.Turner, Frida etc.

When I first watched it, it was on at 10.15 pm with Barry Norman, when I last saw it, it was on at 12.45 pm with Claudia Winkleman, the BBC have been trying to get rid of it since Norman was presenting it.
It would be a perfect 7.30 pm show on BBC4 so long as they found a decent presenter who obviously loved film as much as Barry did.

Best film I saw by Miles last year was Dogman.

And really enjoyed Molly's Game and Three Billboards.

I'm fascinated by Black Panther simultaneously showing up on both best-of and worst-of lists. I'd never been so bored in my life. Others thought it was brilliant.

I thought Black Panther was not terrible for a comic book movie, but that's an exceptionally low bar. It was silly but watchable.

Genuinely good new films that I watched in 2018 (most of these were before the 2018 Oscars):

                                        - Three Billboards
                                        - I Tonya
                                        - Lady Bird
                                        - The Florida Project

Fascinating, but I still don't know if it was good

                                        - Annihilation
                                        - Tully
                                        - The Shape of Water

                                        Way Better than expected

                                        - Game Night

The kind of film you're entertained to stream on a random night, but not worth much more comment:

                                        - Black Panther
                                        - Christopher Robin
                                        - Skyscraper
                                        - Tag
                                        - Adrift
                                        - The Post

                                        Wonderfully bad disaster movie

                                        - The Hurricane Heist

                                        Disappointing

                                        - Early Man
                                        - Oceans 8
                                        - The Spy Who Dumped Me

                                        Almost unwatchably bad

                                        - The Leisure Seeker
                                        - Blockers
                                        - Mamma Mia 2
                                        - Call Me By Your Name
                                        - Phantom Thread

I found Dunkirk fucking rubbish but maybe that’s my Nolan hatred tainting it. It was no darkest hour though. That Tube scene, I mean fuck sake. Even if Churchill didn’t order the troops against Welsh Miners or Red Clydeside George Square he was one of the most horrible bastards of the century. Just lucky who else was around. I’d like to see an Indian biopic of the cunt.
