Looking at Almodóvar times for Saturday or Belfast if not.

I went to see Dune just before Xmas. It was at an Imax Cinema one town over. Booked seats on a Monday night, on line. I counted 35 people inside - we had the whole row to ourselves. My wife said the movie was waaaaay toooo loud. I kinda agree - but I did enjoy this version.

Finally got to Nightmare Alley on its last showing.
Really liked it, visually impressed, always intrigued and some nice echoes of classic 40s films.
Also really tickled that...
SPOILER ALERT
...psychoanalysis turned out to be the more effective 'mentalist' scam

Both The Godfather and Jules et Jim are on in restored glory next weekend, but ticket sales indicate a non-distanced experience so the 3 hours of the former, especially, presents a dilemma...

Annoyed that the Prince Charles have moved back their showing of Blue Collar back to April. Seeing Drive My Car at start of March, followed by The Cranes Are Flying the day after. Cinema is now costing me a fortune since I binned my Cineworld Unlimited card, but the experience of watching films with people who shut the fuck up throughout is much better for my mental health.

I have hardly been to the cinema since the pandemic, but I really miss it. I don't think watching at home ever replicates it.
Me and my wife went out to the cinema on a rare free date night together a couple of weeks ago. We went to the Curzon Soho, where they charge (I think) 17.50 or so each for tickets. That price is a problem for me, as it discourages me from taking a chance on a film. And that dilutes the whole big screen experience of walking into a cinema not knowing what to expect for me. But that said, on this night, walking into a cinema with a big glass of red wine and my wife for a comfy chair and a decent Almodovar film was more than worth it. I'd do it again actually, it really felt like treating ourselves, like a long luxurious bath or a trip to the hairdresser's or something.Last edited by diggedy derek; 19-02-2022, 21:56.

So Cyrano is a musical. A musical with awful, unmemorable songs in the worst West End/Broadway style. And to fit in all these songs they've gutted all the big scenes and dialogues. You just get summaries or poorly written versions.
Someone in the production must really like the 1990 version as there were a few nods to it through the film.
Dinklage is good at least. Joe Wright didn't seem to leave much impact.

Spider-Man : No Way Home is a cinematic phenomenon, one of the highest-grossing films of all time and may end up actually topping that list.
It's absurd to compare the length of it's theatrical run to that of most films, let alone an eccentric independent oddity (albeit an expensive one) like Moonfall.

went to Tyneside last night to see Mark Thomas showing clips from his TV show of 97-2004. And talking at great length and very amusingly about some of the stunts they pulled.

At showings of both Cyrano and Parallel Mothers recently we've had to ask people to be quiet. It's like they can't keep shtum for two fucking hours and treat the place as their front room. I know it's already been commented about on this thread, but it's enough to make me sack off the cinema altogether. Same with the theatre. Sigh.

Moonfall is absolutely fucking brilliant shite.
Went to the PCC to watch Paul Schrader's Hardcore. George C. Scott wears some top shirts and despite the overall dark tone of the movie, utterly bizarre scene in which Scott dons a wig and fake tasche to pose a pornography producer to much hilarity. Nice score.

Watched Red Rocket this week, the latest film by Sean Baker (Tangerine, The Florida Project). I've yet to see Tangerine but it is on Prime, and I really liked The Florida Project. I should try and watch his earlier independent films. Red Rocket is about a locqacious, down and out former L. A. based porn star that comes back to Texas City to sleep on his estranged wife's couch, having obviously run into trouble. The longer the film goes on, the less charming the main character becomes, especially as he starts a relationship with a 17 year old local girl, with big plans for their future together.
It's lovely to look at, Baker certainly has an eye for location. The Florida Project was set in a dingy motel right on the outskirts of WaltDisneyWorld, whereas in this film the main location is dominated by refineries. Cast are all great, and a lot of them are non-actors.

I've just been to see Lost City. Which is a PG Romancing the Stone shot in that shiny Netflix way that makes everything look like a soundstage and really cheap.
It was fine, very funny in places but let itself slow down and become too serious towards the end.
