I found Ragtime utterly immersive when channel 4 showed it at an ungodly hour in the mid 90s. Was tripping mind, but it got me into the book which I still adore. No idea if the film still stands up as it's unavailable for streaming or region 2 Blu ray/dvd.

Westchester County, just Northeast of NYC

            30-40 minutes from Grand Central

Would be considered "stockbroker belt" by you.

            Deeply, deeply uncool.

That's been on TV frequently for as long as I can recall.

Good shout. It was actually filmed in Larry McMurtry's home town of Archer, TX.

In Seinfeld, Scarsdale Surprise is the Broadway show that Kramer gets a Tony award for despite not being involved in it, and then gets beaten up by Raquel Welch.
