He'd been performing since the 50s so had a long career.

I've discovered today that John Bird is the one I thought John Fortune was (and vice versa obviously)

Is she now. I had a bit of a pash for her when I was 15.

RIP. Bloody brilliant dialogues with John F. His comedy stood for all the values I believe in. I see he had a troubled life with depression and alcohol issues at one stage, thank god he came through that to produce his best work with John F on the B B and F programme.

The dialogues with Fortune were remarkable. I didn’t know they were improvised and that puts them on a very high level indeed

                          RIP a good one.

It was my honour once to find myself standing next to him in M&S on Oxford Street as we perused underpants.

It has been funny to see the sheer number of tweets which acknowledge his status as one of the great comic satirists of the last 60 years, yet which all sign off by saying....

"However, he'll always be Marmalade Atkins's dad to me."
