    TOTP on BBC4

Ahem, Cruel Summer, Love in the First Degree, Robert de Niro's Waiting ...

But they were very influenced by Tamla, girl groups etc.

But I ended up enjoying it enormously (without admitting to the draggers).
I saw them in 2010 at the Barbican and it was still a hugely entertaining show. The image could almost make them seem like a novelty act but August Darnell had some solid NYC musical credentials.

I for one didn't know it was a Bananarama song. Their version sounds pretty dreadful, with the weak vocals dumped at the bottom of the mix.

The Bluebells improved it vastly, one for the polished turds thread.

Have to confess I didn't know that, either. (I mean, I knew they'd released a single of that title, but it had never dawned that it was the same song.)

It seems that Robert Hodgens wrestled himself a co-writing credit for the Bluebells' chart-topping reissue in 1993. (Having heard and quite enjoyed other Bluebells choons like Cath and I'm Falling, I think I just assumed it was theirs on hearing it in 1984.)

The Bananas' vocals always sounded somewhat lost in the mix to me - until SAW got a hold of them, anyway...

I know there must have been some bad TOTP episodes, but none of them can hold a candle to the abysmal crescendo of drivel and cringeworthy shit that has just been broadcast.

Christ. I hated it at the time and remembered why when I saw it again the other night. The R1 DJ's are such arses too. Yer man introducing Monsoon said it was his record of the week a few weeks back and seemed to want the credit for discovering it.

Horrendous programme. Shit novelty pop records introduced by a bunch of creepy wankers

'Twas quite an episode, Mick Mills and Dave Watson taking prize for most awkward looking. Also couldn't help singing "whether bi or straight or bender" to Patrice Rushen.

Weird times, highlighted by the half-naked girls dancing with Chas and Dave. I suppose you could say what's the difference between that and Miley Cyrus twerking with the rapey guy?

Top trolling from the BBC, having a football themed episode a couple of days after Tony Towner's dive at Millmoor severely damaged our promotion chances.

That comparison would require Chas and Dave to come across as rapey. I'm prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Not necessarily Chas & Dave who would be rapey, more the members of the production team who thought it would be a good idea for both TOTP and MTV. Simon Bates insinuated it would be racy when asking Glen Hoddle whether his wife was watching.

How did the Spurs segment deal with the awkward issue of having two Argentinian players in the midst of the Falklands jingoism? IIRC Spurs had to drop Villa for the final (although I think he was essentially a sub at this point).

Is the rampant sexism pre-ironic? I could imagine a similar thing being done around the laddism era (Euro 96-ish) that would at least try to disguise the sexism in a bit of irony.

I wonder which footballer has the most appearances? Hoddle? England 82, 86, Spurs 81,82 and Hoddle and Waddle?

Chas & Dave had fallen into a sexism row previously, of course. I remember my ol' man telling me of a feminist protest outside the university where he lectured (QMC, London), when Messrs Hodges and Peacock were due to play a gig there. This was late 1980 - when Rabbit was in the charts...

But Spurs were everywhere in 1981-1982: only Liverpool were our superiors - the rest of youse, our bitches, as it should be. I've not seen this repeat yet, but surely Villa wasn't on the show? (Ardiles, as suggested, had gone home.)

                                                Why 'MTV'?

MTV because the producers who okay'd Miley Cyrus twerking would be riding the same train of thought as the TOTP producers who okay'd Spurs + scantily clad girls.

Does MTV still show music videos? (Or indeed soft-porn promos with only the merest connection to the supposedly-associated song?)
