    Favourite Radio Voices

I'm very BBC Radio 4 heavy, which reflects my listening preferences, but anyway. In no particular order...

    Kirsty Young
    Neil Nunes
    Eddie Mair
    Jenni Murray
    Tom Sutcliffe
    Lyce Doucet (yes - really)
    Jarvis Cocker

    Has this been done before?

The sadly missed Simon Hoggart was always a favourite of mine and Matthew Parris now. John Wilson who presents Mastertapes has a good voice too, though I didn’t know until now that he’s the son of Bob Wilson the goalkeeper.

I can’t stand Jarvis Cocker’s radio voice, full of all that terrible Radio 6 portentous “authenticity”.

Have you not heard him on Radio 4, presenting 'Wireless Nights'?

Yes, same problem. He’s a terrible old pseud. It took me a few years to realise that, while I liked Pulp, Jarvis by himself got on my nerves.

I always liked Sara Cox’s voice but I have a thing for feisty Northern lasses

I quite like Tony Livesey's voice on Five Live Drive.

I can't listen to Nihal. He speaks in a monotone as if he's reading lines in a school assembly.

                            John Arlott.
                            John Peel.

Mark Radcliffe was very important to me when he first started doing Out On Blue Six in 1991, during a low period in my life. Still have residual affection for him.

Less comfortable with Peel. Despite his importance, the voice felt smug or, just, tired.

Anne Nightingale seemed super-cool in the post-punk era but I didn't really approve of the name switch to "Annie."

I was just about to reply with Livesey, he always sounds like he's having a good time, which is nice.

Nihal started off well I thought, but is believing a bit of the hype about him being a good interviewer (which he is) and is now doing the 'I'm being serious here guys' voice all the time, so I tend to turn him off after a few minutes these days.

I'm a big fan of Lyse Doucet's voice, always makes me listen to what she's saying.

I liked John Inverdale when he started out but he then he switched to TV and was bloody awful. Illusion shattered.

I’m another one in the love camp for Neil Nunes’ continuity baritone.

And Mariella Frostrup on Open Book still has that sexy lilt.

Used to like her on Five Live, and I never listen to Radio 4 so she's a bit of a miss.

I presumed we were steering clear of sports commentators here, otherwise it's a whole other list for me.

Actually, on the Radio 4 vibe, growing up my folks would clear off on Sunday mornings and I'd be alone in the house with Alastair Cooke on the radio talking about America. His voice is still my favourite radio voice.

Outstanding sports commentary voices of yore: Peter Jones of course but the also late, and equally great Peter Bromley.
