Yeah, that's why some people on Twitter refer to her as Deputy Dawg.

Did she always speak with such a strong accent?

The thing that I really don't like about her is that you used to be able to see the cognitive dissonance tearing Sean Spicer apart as he struggled with the knowledge that he was now one step below Comical Ali. Huckabee sanders on the other hand talks like a dull witted true believer of whatever insane bullshit she is peddling, and gives the strong impression that she would happily kill a child with her bare hands for that bullshit.

The fact that we can understand the daughter of an Arkansas preacher man would suggest that she has gone to great lengths to tone down her accent.

Actually, I'm surprised to see she went to a (now, at least) majority minority public school.

Yes. He reminded me of Scott McClellen, not only in terms of his appearance, but also that both of them looked like they wanted to run away.

That may not have been the case when she was a child. Either Next year, or shortly afterwards the majority of high school seniors will be non white, which suggests that the time has come to extend the definition of whiteness, and keep the coalition going.

Yeah, but it wouldn't have been Eton. She only left in about 2000. I was expecting her to have gone to private school.

In England we don't really have the equivalent of people like her, beneficiaries of political nepotism, with strong regional accents.

That and you are a country in the grips of a multi century class war and war against the regions that seems to never end.

That's not really right. In the first part of my lifetime for sure, London was seen as a problem, with its "inner cities". It was quite a shock to me in 1996 to discover how suburban so much of South London was.

Economically it was in relative decline as a region till the mid 90s.

The Regional war makes more sense if you think of it as London, the SE and the East midlands shitting on everyone else. Without the initial distributions of wealth that graph is essentially meaningless. The South West seems to be doing quite well in that graph, but 40 years ago those people were subsisting on a diet of stones and seaweed. Now they can afford nettles and grass.

East Midlands? Haven’t they fallen behind Scotland now? (On overall GDP)

Yep, and all those poor people who used to live on Portabello Road now drive Bentleys and Jags. It's been great for them.

I'm not sure where I got the East midlands from. There's a pocket of substantial prosperity around birmingham , which is in the west midlands. but a lot of the rest of the region has blight. There also appears to be a fairly sharp divide between regions in the South East as well, with the bit nearer london, and the south coast doing quite well, but cornwall is about as wealthy as anywhere that scenic could be expected to be.

Em, Cornwall is SW. Kent is quite fucked in places, no? They certainly seemed to have banjaxed their education system by the retention of grammar schools and the 11 plus.

I think the trend since the mid 90s could be called "regional war", for sure. I was just saying it's a fairly recent thing.

Apart from during the height of the Industrial Revolution, the Great Wen has always dominated the UK economy, North always poorer than South, just like Paris and Dublin in other over centralized states (though all least France has given proper autonomy to local govt, if still paranoid about any regional devolution).

tubby Thatcherism was the economic version of the Harrying of the North. With the North starting a lot nearer Watford than you'd think.

And yes, Cornwall is in the South West, Gah.

I see from catching up with my Seth Myers that Trump is suing stormy Daniels for violating the Non Disclosure agreement that he claimed not to have with her, and his lawyers are called Charles J Harder and Ryan J Stonerock. Why does everyone in this courtcase have a pornstar pseudonym?

Lots of London, as it was then, was harried too. Places like Hackney had lots of industry till well into the Thatcher era. The population of London was falling till the late 80s.

Obviously, Thatcherism made changes that made London richer, but it took time for them to kick in properly, and for a while they were balanced out by the Lawson-engineered housing crash.

And more general Tory domination of the council.

Remember Willy Hague's 2001 election performance?

On that day, the Tories gained 6 seats on Kent Council.
