Why do Sheffield United have two crossed swords, the kind which an executioner out of Arabian Nights would swing?

Why are they called that?
Is it a new addition to the crest?
If adding blades, why Arabian?
Sheffield United have swords, Arsenal have a whole gun. You need to equip that owl of yours with a Kalashnikov to get in the game.

(un)interesting Manchester United fact: their nickname was copied from Salford RLFC, who were dubbed Les Diables Rouges on an early tour in France*. Matt Busby liked the sound of it, and nicked it.
The shame of having your nickname co-opted by one of the biggest clubs, in a sport much bigger than your own, has traumatised Salford to the point that they have situated their website at a truly unweildy and ugly address: http://reds.originalreddevils.com.
* - I looked on their website to see if they mention this at all, but the HISTORY button leads to a depressingly blank page. Also, I should hate myself for using the word 'dubbed' up there, seeing as I am not a football journalist.

Sheffield = steel city, and all that.
Wednesday used to be "the Blades" and United "the Cutlers", then Wednesday moved to Owlerton and United took over "the Blades" mantle.

Being better than Wednesday, of course.
Just winding you up, Andy.
Charlton have a sword. Everton have a tower (not exactly a weapon).
I'm quite sure there must be a club with a machine gun or a machete somewhere in Africa (Mocambique or Angola come to mind).

They are likely intended to be seaxes (old northern(ish) European blade), as featured in the arms of both Middlesex and Essex, such as MCCC:

Botswana is great for this sort of thing - Mogoditshane Fighters have a sword, Defence Force XI have two swords, Notwane have two hammers and Extension Gunners a pair of revolvers.
And I'm certainly not putting it into Google Image Search at work!
