    Bravo all
    Thanks, everyone. PhDs get written up late into the night as well, don't they? (Do we know why the OTF clock is an hour ahead of GMT?)

    WARDEN was the solution to the first-ever cryptic clue I wrote aged 14, in an English homework task: "Short Edward returns after fighting to his room (6)"; the school had a Warden's Room.

        Short Edward = NED, returns = DEN
        fighting = WAR

        If you took DEN as a synonym for 'room' could you have an &lit?

        'Sent to his room after fighting (6)'?

        Or is this only semi-&lit?
