Perhaps slightly, Kev, though the solution is (I think) clear enough.
I love the 'sandwiches' device; ok with you if I nick that? The word 'in' does double duty, I'd say; it's not quite kosher to have 'in sandwiches' to mean IN.....IN.
Cheers IT, I know what you mean about the two jobs. I kept thinking that it ought to be 'in in sandwiches' but couldn't bring myself to write that it course. If you can make a neater job with "sandwiches", please feel free!

The catch is that you'd describe the sandwich according to its filling, whereas 'in' is being used as the bread here.

In your original clue I reckon "...in double sandwiches" might be workable.

                                        is better I guess

just passing through, ad hoc. If I do ever manage to solve a clue someone else has always gets there first- looks like no one's around Sunday morning

OM (= Order of Merit) can be referenced as 'order'. So it became 'order in gratitude': T HANKS.

                                                Ain't it always so?

We come up with what we think are gimmes to either move the game along, or we're smug about the wordplay thinking wussens clever, yet much head-scatching ensues.
